Hot off the heals of GovGeeks & Drinks and Social Media Week, once again we are hosting our monthly OpenNY Forum Meetup at New Work City. For February, we will discuss the following important issues:
1. Code for America, what is it and what is the DC team working on?
2. Intelligent Cities Conference (#iCities), what is it and how can you attend?
3. (Potentially) A report back on Thai Open Government initiatives.
4. GovTogether, a direct democracy tool in development.
1. Code for America, DC Team - http://codeforamerica.org/dc/
...is a volunteer program that brings America's most talented geeks to municipalities to create collaborative & open solutions. This month, the DC team will visit NYC to talk about their program and engage in feedback from the OpenNY community. Visit http://codeforamerica.org/dc/ for a complete overview and collaborative, participatory platform.
2. National Building Museum's Intelligent Cities -http://www.nbm.org/intelligentcities
...over the past few months, The National Building Museum has built a constituency of geeks who are passionate about building intelligent cities. Hands down, this is one of the most interesting conversations on rebuilding America's cities. This month, we will review how you can shape this community < http://icities.uservoice.com > and nominate potential #icities delegates to attend the National Building Museum's Intelligent Cities Conference < http://bit.ly/icities-nom >.
3. (Potentially) A report back on Thai Open Government initiatives.
@Hunt, Sira Sujjinanont, is headquartered in Bangkock, Thailand, and built zickr.com, Thailand's version of Digg.com. He and his friends are at the forefront of advocating for a more open, transparent, and participatory Thai government. If he can make it to NYC, he will give us a brief rundown on Open Government initiatives in Thailand.
4. GovTogether: http://www.govtogether.com
is about giving the PEOPLE the POWER to VOTE directly on legislation. They will present their idea and solicit feedback from the OpenNY Forum. GovTogether's concept will allow legislators who PLEDGE to direct democracy to abide by the MAJORITY VOTE of their district. By 2012, GovTogether aims to have at least one newly elected U. S. Congressman utilizing this system. Their first step is to launch a campaign to promote/air out the concept, and begin fundraising on kickstarter. They use the OpenNY forum to begin the discussion. Please pass along feedback, support, criticism, advice, Twitter followers @GovTogether followers, and idea votes on the coming soon page: http://www.govtogether.com
