Open Sky Zen Meditation & Buddhist Studies Group is a nomadic Zen Center in New York City founded by Ven. Lawrence Dō'an Grecco, a Buddhist monk and certified Zen teacher.
Our purpose is to help people better understand their true nature so that sanity, dignity, and compassion can prevail in this world.
Each class begins with simple meditation instruction and practice that anyone can do--even those who have tried before and feel that they’ve failed. After the practice period Lawrence gives a dharma talk that illustrates how Buddhist principles and techniques can be meaningful and helpful in your everyday life. Most classes normally include an experiential exercise, group discussion, and an open question and answer period. We are open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike. All events are designed to be accessible to everyone who joins us.
Open Sky is part of the Five Mountain Zen Order which represents the Korean Soen lineage of Zen Master Seung Sahn and the Vietnamese lineage of Ven. Dr. Thich Thien-An. We are dedicated to offering Zen teachings and meditation practice in a way that is accessible and useful in your everyday life.
We offer meditation instruction and practice, dharma talks, group discussions, interactive exercises, LGBT groups, and other events several times a month at various locations. “Zen is a method through which we can connect with our true nature through consistent practice. It helps us see our lives clearly so we can respond appropriately to whatever arises with clarity, love, and compassion. In Zen there is no dogma or anything to believe in other than our true selves which are inherently perfect and complete.”
