Open Source is a production method, that relies on a feedback loop. Much like a democracy. Do your part and participate, or don't expect the benefits of the system to accrue. Simple as that. So go VOTE you ninnymuggins.
TEKSystems rep Parsa Bastami will be in the house. Today he is looking for a mid-level Mobile developer with Phonegap experience.
80% of Developers using Open Source
(In a 1,400 user Gartner survey...)
Why? The majority of them have switched to open source because they perceive open source development programs as having better performance and reliability. This, as Hammond observed, is a change. "Open source used to be popular because of the lower cost. Now the cost of tools is the least important element for developers."
...open source is doing more than just replacing old software. It's also leading the way in new software. Hammond cited big data and NoSQL as areas where open source has become the software groundbreaker. Proprietary software doesn't really stand a chance in these new fields.
Will the DOD and VA use Open Source Health Records? Maybe..
To be able to share records between the two separate departments - something they cannot do now. It is an $11 Billlion government contract, to manage health records for the DOD. One integrator, Price Waterhouse Cooper, is pitching to use the same VistA system the VA is already building and deploying in house.
"You never get locked in," Garrett told FCW. "If they choose to get support or services from somebody other than us, they can go to any OSEHRA member and buy functionality and buy support. Like any competitive situation, it keeps everyone on their toes. It gives them an opportunity to take on any innovation that comes out from the industry. It basically gives [DOD] the right to control their own destiny that they didn't have when they evaluated whether they wanted to go right to the VA's version of VistA or not"

---- Caution: Generic Meetup description follows ---
We are a group of some serious, and some not-so-serious, geeks that want to see the Open Source Ethos spread and help as many people as will let it. During the meetings, which are pretty much an excuse to get together and have fun, we catch up on topical and industry news, projects, code releases, recent technical problems and solutions...
There are sometimes presentations - anything open source but if it is software then running on more than 1 platform is preferred (Linux, Mac, Win, etc.). Mobile is an exception due to Apple's refusal to let FOSS code onto their IOS platform - so we talk about Android a lot more.
I you have an itch to scratch that can be solved by technology, bring it on in! You well always get an educated opinion and sometimes a useful answer too. The group is not homogeneous around one specific technology, or industry, or language or nationality. What we have in common is our desire to make our lives better, and the set of people in "our" is everyone, everywhere.
Join us afterwards for lunch! Hope you have a hunger for adventure. ;)
