Around the time of the 16th century, a rise in the concept of the individual began. Out of this shift in thinking arose movements such as the Protestant Reformation and the Age of Enlightenment.
Contrast that with Eastern cultures such as Japan in which decisions are made primarily regarding the group/community and sometimes the individual is completely overlooked.
What is the ideal mentality? What have we to gain from an increase in community focus? What have we to lose by focusing less on the individual? And lastly, how does this tie into our spirituality?
