Learners Meetup

  • July 3, 2013 · 7:30 PM

New Format:

  1. Welcome and introduction to coaches - what can you help someone with?
  2. 15 minute scheduled talk - the talks are aimed so that everyone can get something out of it, no matter what their level of experience or programming language.
  3. A “mini barcamp” - anyone can propose a topic they want to discuss or get help with and we organise ourselves into discussion groups or pairs. At the end we get together as a group and summarised what we discussed.

Scheduled Talk:

Learning techniques rather than technologies by Ellen Koenig

In our software development jobs, we frequently find ourselves applying and polishing existing skills rather than expanding into new ones. Yet with technology always changing and developers being eternally curious, we need effective learning skills to master new subjects effectively. Psychologist have identified the principles of what it takes to master new skills: Challenge, clear goals, feedback, repetition, concentration. In this talk Ellen will show how these principles can be applied to learning different programming languages, frameworks and technologies as well as software development methods using examples for learning goals, feedback mechanism and repetition strategies.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The idea of the Learners Meetup is to have a monthly slot where we can rock up and

  • hear talks which are on a level we can understand
  • connect with other people learning tech to share knowledge, help and motivate each other

Learners of all levels are welcome, especially absolute beginners. As a beginner you get access to people who may be able to help you, and as a more experienced programmer you can share your expertise and train your mentoring skills by being a coach.

------------------------------------------------------------------

We suggest you grab something to eat before the event (or bring it with you) as the evening tends to go on until around 9pm. We usually also have some drinks afterwards. We are looking forward to seeing you!

Mini barcamp doesn't include any private room for group discussion nor projector. Is more about friendly discussion about what you are curious about with the tool we have right there. :)

At this last learners meetup I mentioned that I was interested in building a holodeck (an immersive 360° environment) as well as learn to program an arduino chip. I just wanted to let anyone who is interested in the holodeck project that I scheduled a meetup for that with several design thinking coaches to assist in the process. You are welcome to join us on Sat 20 July: http://www.meetup.com/Das-Baumhaus-Berlin-Project-Development-Collaboration/events/128544932/

    Very good. Nicely structured.

The only complaint I have is that there was not really enough time for our discussion group to make much progress. There were quite a few in our group (nine I think). By the time we'd introduced ourselves there wasn't much time left, and not everyone got to speak.

This was my first time at this Meetup, but looks very promising. Thanks.

We're trying to find a balance here to allow intense discussions but at the same time keep the official meet up within a reasonable time frame. I was very happy about how the discussions continued afterwards. Maybe next time we add a few more minutes of group discussions to the plan. Also everybody is invited to get involved with how we split up the groups so they don't get too big.

I want to learn how to program an arduino (sp?) chip to control the led lighting of a piece of functional art. Would this meet up be a good place for me to start that journey even if I am an absolute beginner programmer?

    June 25, 2013

    • xMartin

This meet up is especially for absolute beginners, so yes. There might be Arduino people around, too.

Thanks for the response. I think I will come then... In case anyone is interested here is a link to the art piece on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.c...

Ehy guys we created a Trello board for everybody of you that would like to get more involved in our event, would like to help out with organization and be more active part of the OTS community.
You can take a task on the board and target as yours and take care about that for this event. The Trello link is:
    https://trello.com/board/learners-meetup/51c186d4eb34969f30002b5b

For edit you should send me your email, i will add you and then you are free to use it.
Is the first time we use Trello as tool so any feedback or suggestion are more than welcome.

    Let's build our community! :)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
