Learners Meetup

  • Feb 5, 2014 · 7:30 PM

Tech learners unite! ;) The learners meetup is our place to explore tech topics, get help on the questions that block our learning progress & meet like-minded learners to get inspired, share experiences or even join forces to learn together. The motto is "everybody is a learner", so no matter what level you are on, this meetup invites you to follow your curiosity and explore new areas.

The meetup features: Certified 100% jargon-free talks about tech fundamentals, learning and hacking, followed by discussions in small groups on your most burning questions related to these topics.

Talk: AfricaHackTrip (ca. 15 mins) – A few months ago a bunch of European hackers made a trip to Africa to explore the tech scene, to exchange, collaborate and connect the communities. We hosted Barcamps and Hackathons in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania, met at least 400 tech people interested in topics like open-source, web development, community, mobile apps, UX… Community-driven education has also been a topic and we even founded the OTS Nairobi chapter! I’d like to tell you a little bit about it. Maybe also about the crazy life you can lead as a "hacker" ;)

Martin is a web developer focussing on frontend and user interfaces currently freelancing. He is co-organizing the OTS Learners Meetup, JavaScript workshops and JavaScript Learners Groups and thinks most of the apps around should be HTML5.

Talk: Your first open source contribution (ca. 10 mins) - Getting started with contributing to open source can
seem very intimidating at first. This talk shows how to pick your first project and get started with contributing.

Philipp is a recent graduate from the OTS Hackership programme where he has been focusing on learning about Ruby on Rails and Test Driven Development.

A mini barcamp! (ca. 45 mins) - Anyone is invited to propose a topic they want to discuss or get help with and we organise ourselves into groups or pairs. At the end we share what we discussed.

We usually continue our discussions with a drink in a nearby bar. Looking forward to see you!

There's another Learners Meetup this Wednesday, 5th March. Hear about the AfricaHackTrip and what's inside a web request!

I am so sorry but I have to cancel my AfricaHackTrip talk for this meetup. I will be out of town. I sure want to do it at the next meetup and I hope to see you there.

    Have lots of fun together!
