Math for Visuals: a "Meetshop"

  • Dec 15, 2012 · 2:00 PM

Hello Everyone,

we are planning a cross between a meetup and a workshop: a "Meetshop" if you will!

The Topic: Math for Visuals!

We will start off a bit oldschool, using paper and scissors to create various geometric shapes! Then there will be a few presentations. StudioNAND http://www.nand.io will be on hand to speak on math/shapes in generative design using Processing. We will also have two other talks touching on topics of vectors, polar coordinates , linear transformation in 2D as well as a talk about the screen as a cartesian plane (coordinate system) covering basic 2D maths for visual programming. Finally, we'd like to have people creating their own geometric shapes and designs in the computer, so please bring your laptop with!

This meetshop is aimed at beginners and designers who are interested in learning more about math as it relates to visual design.
If you have anyway questions, please get in touch.
We hope to see you all there!

Hi everyone. We had a real great time with you all. Thanks for coming and staying late for those who could (and some who couldn't but did!). The examples for the 3D part are on Github: https://github.com/SableRaf/P3Dlessons

See you at a next meetup.
    Bye!

    Hi Everyone,

if you could all download Processing (2.0 Beta 7) which was released a couple of days ago, and install it on your laptops BEFORE the meetshop, that would be great! http://processing.org/download/ We will be using it on Saturday. If you have any questions, let us know, cheers!

Hi everyone, just showing up to say that if you're going to install the latest version of Processing then be aware that if you were using it with Arduino (via Firmata) it won't work anymore...
So I'll suggest you to not delete the latest stable release (1.5.1 I guess), and yes you can have both in your computer!

      December 10, 2012

    • Alessandro C.

PS: also, it seems like Processing firmata library is no longer being updated. That makes me very sad...

Hi Everyone, just wanted to add that this meetshop will be a potluck so feel free to bring cakes, cookies, fruit etc. for yourself and the group to snack on! If anyone wants to bring in their own baked goods and sell them for charity, you're welcome to do so as well!

Rachel - what would you consider required reading for real newbies prior to this meetshop? Any youtube links that introduce the topic? Thanks :)

    December 4, 2012

    • Ramin

The introduction will be very basic. So I it should be understandable without much foreknowledge. Knowing a bit processing is helpful, but it is very intuitive so you would grasp it there too.

Rachel and Ramin said it all but as the third member of the "Ra-club", I had to step in ;)

Those who want to go a little deeper can also read the "transformations" tutorial : http://processing.org...
