Introduction to making a website (HTML+CSS for beginners) - part 1

Hi everyone,

Our first workshop will be an introduction to making websites (HTML + CSS for absolute beginners) - no previous experience required. We will go over the basic building blocks of websites, and by the end of the workshop you will have made your very own personal portfolio website.

The meetup will run over 2 weeks, so there will be a second event on Monday 24th Feb - the material is designed to run over both sessions, but if you can only make one of the events that will be fine.

Please RSVP only if you're coming along as a learner. If you would like to coach, please email us at [masked] (that's so we can make sure we have enough coaches for people who are learning).

You will need to bring a laptop, to work on the exercises, we will help you get set up with everything else on the day.

Looking forward to seeing everybody then!

Danielle, Gen + Vikki

Do you have notes or an outline from this session?

There were no notes. All what we were given were links to websites. All starts here: http://opentechschool... , just follow the document and you will be doing what we did, without the advantage of the advisers in order to ask questions.

Great event. Hope to be able to go to others soon.

It was very nice. Looking forward to next one.

Glad you enjoyed it. See you at the next one!

I enjoyed the session. The mentors were very friendly and helpful. I found that the tutorials were pitched at the right level for someone learning HTML/CSS, although they contained some jargon that would be unclear to complete newcomers to the subject.

    • Gen A.

Thank you for the feedback Richard!

I didn't get a chance to join this lesson but looking at the feedback would really like to get a place for the next one.. Part 2 is fully booked now as well. When are you planning to announce the next session, so I hopefully won't miss it and get a chance to secure a spot.

    thanks in advance

    February 18, 2014

    • Gen A.

Hi Elena, we'll evaluate the experience from these first two classes and plan future classes accordingly. We're hoping to be able to announce son what / when the next few classes will be, so just hang tight. Thank you for your interest in learning with OpenTechSchool London!

I found the online course easy to follow because I had read around the subject extensively and had prepared my laptop by setting up a HTML/CSS editor. However it seemed to be quite long and covered some advanced topics. It would have been helpful if someone gave a talk about HTML/CSS first and introduced the project we would be working on.

Some amount of preparation always helps, so it's good you did that. Thank you for the feedback on the materials / process. We'll certainly be reviewing all feedback as it will help us improve future classes.

    Thanks. Really enjoyed it.

Great to hear that! Thanks for coming along and see you next Monday!

    Hi guys.
I've only just been confirmed on this and am delighted that I can come- however, I can't bring my own laptop as I've left it at home (because I didn't know I was coming on this).
I have my work pc which is a very basic Dell vostro. Is this still compatible? Would there be a spare I can use?

    Sorry for being difficult! K

    • Richard C.

      OK. I'll bring it along.

      February 17, 2014

    • Gen A.

Thanks for bringing that extra laptop Richard!

  • Michael

Hi there, I can no longer come to this event due to illness so I hope it is not too late for someone(on the waiting list) to benefit from this and take my place. Cheerio.

    February 17, 2014

    • Vikki

Hi Michael, Thanks for letting us know that you're unable to make it, we appreciate that. Hope you feel better soon, and maybe you can join us on another workshop later in the year :)

      Pleasure. Will do.

What does one need in the laptop? I am bringing my mobile phone only :-) (I can read html documents from its storage and have installed a text editor app).

    February 17, 2014

    • Vikki

Hey Jose, whilst it is possible to write a webpage using just your phone, I think you'll find it challenging to look at the tutorial, edit your code, and then review the webpage you've made on your phone. If at all possible please bring a laptop, otherwise you may have problems with the worksheet.

Hi, I haven't received an email. Have checked spam etc, but can't find it.

    February 15, 2014

    • Louise G.

Strange, I RSVPd quite a while ago. Anyway, happy to come just with laptop and learn. Thanks. Really looking forward to it.

Hi Louise, also try and check your Email Notification Settings for this Meetup group and its Meetups. See you Monday!

  • Kostas

Hi Gen as a total beginner in coding I have to make two stupid questions. First of all, I don't think that I received any e-mail or accidentally deleted it. And second we don't need anything else except for our laptops?

    February 15, 2014

    • Vikki

Hey Kostas, no you don't need to bring anything but your laptop, we'll get you set up with everything else on Monday - see you then!

      February 15, 2014

    • Kostas

Thanks Vikki. Look forward to seeing you on Monday

      February 15, 2014

  • Richard C.

I probably won't be able to get there until 7pm, due to work. Have some basic HTML from online editing work, but no CSS.

    February 7, 2014

    • Richard C.

      We'll be coding in longhand?

      <worried>That'll be interesting.</worried>

      February 15, 2014

    • Gen A.

Yes, we're not using tools like Dreamweaver or anything like that. It's a good idea to have a quick look at the course materials beforehand (the link to the materials was sent via email yesterday, to those confirmed for this meetup as of yesterday morning).

  • Elena

    Hi everyone.
I'm only on a waiting list at the moment.. and I probably won't get a spot for this one, I hope to be able to make it for the next Monday though.. Wondering whether it's free?

    Thanks

Yup it was in the spam :) Thanks for the info. Looking forward to more sessions.

      February 15, 2014

  • Katy S.

Ahh I'm on the wait list... what a shame! Is there any chance of a space!?

    February 14, 2014

    • Gen A.

See the email we sent to those on the waiting list.

I am really looking forward to this too and hope the Python one gets scheduled in the future.

    2 · February 7, 2014

    • Vikki

Awesome :) We're hoping to schedule the python one at some point, but wanted to start with a potentially simpler workshop so more people might be comfortable with the python stuff. We'll keep you posted!

Gutted I can't make these two sessions. Hope there are some more sessions soon that I can come to as really looking forward to it :)

    February 7, 2014

    • Gen A.

Hi Isla, sorry to hear that. Yes, there will be more classes in the next few months.

      February 7, 2014

  • Amos D.

shame. would love to attend this, however won't be around. Will you be running this course again?

    February 7, 2014

    • Gen A.

Hi Amos, yes this HTML/CSS class will be offered again, maybe in a few months as there are other free courses (say on Javascript or Python) that will be scheduled first. But we'll see and advise if we can offer this again sooner.
