Introduction to programming (using Python) - Part 1

Hey everyone,

Our next workshop will be a basic introduction to programming, where we will introduce you to the absolute basics of writing code. We will get you set up using a friendly programming language called python, and you will make some drawings to illustrate the principles behind some simple programming concepts. You don't need any experience, just a willingness to learn and a laptop :)

Please RSVP only if you're coming along as a learner. If you would like to coach, that's awesome, thank you! But please instead email us at [masked] (that's so we can make sure we have enough coaches for people who are learning).

You will need to bring a laptop, to work on the exercises; we will help you get set up with everything else on the day. If you're curious, you can get a sneak peek of the material at http://opentechschool.github.io/python-beginners/en/index.html

Looking forward to seeing you in April

Thanks a lot Gen, Vikki and volunteers. It was very helpful to me.

Hi Ozge, we're glad that you found it helpful. Your husband Can (Jan) has kindly volunteered to coach last Monday, yet you waited to get a confirmed spot like anyone else, without an ounce of complaint. Thanks for being patient!

    • Vikki

Thanks Richard, very kind of you! I will try to get some python installs on USB sticks for next time so the wifi isn't such an issue too (though you won't need it now as you'll be all set up :))

      April 8, 2014

    • Richard C.

Thanks Vikki. Sending out a note before the session asking people to install any software needed before the session begins could help with the wifi being hogged too. ;-)

Thanks to Vikki, Gen and all the volunteers for a great event. I like the format of the workshop and enjoyed doing something graphical with Python.

Not sure why others are complaining as I think you do a marvellous job at organising these events. There is obviously a lot of work that has gone into the workshop material and found it easy to follow. I would be happy to volunteer to help where I can.

    Thanks again

Forgive me, but I can’t see any justifiable ground for grievance against the organisers or the meeting, given:

    1) it was free
    2) professionals were giving up their time freely
    3) experts were available on hand to assist at all times
    4) the venue was hospitable with free beverages and snacks
    5) any question was answered in a few seconds
    6) the organisers were approachable and cheerful.

Oh, how I wish all meetings were as agreeable.

Thank you, we appreciate the support! Great to know that its useful for you as well (and I too appreciate the free biscuits :P)

I think a week before the date people should say yes i can do the course or not, it is not good to prevent people whom have the right mindset and passion to do the course.

Also, i am in London and have the right to complain if things are not right - I told you guy at least two and half weeks ago to organise this otherwise you will have chaos.

I am a from a public relations background i know what i am talking about. I think Gen you need to rethink how to do your classes and set proper timetables in advance or have a bigger venue to cater for a big demand for what your doing

Hello Vicki i think you and your organisers, also coaches need to be more professional about what has happened. You have a demand then prepare and deal with the demand

    April 8, 2014

    • Vikki

Hey Eugene, thanks for clarifying. You do have the right to voice complaints, and we do take them seriously and try to fix them where we're able. There isn't much we can do about people not being able to attend at the last minute(happens to everyone!), except free up spaces to the waitlist, and that happens. As for having more spaces at events, our biggest issue is having enough coaches, and as we're new we just don't have enough yet! We are working on this right now, but for now we just want to make sure that we can individually help everyone who shows up. I certainly feel its better to help some people than no-one.

In terms of being professional, we try as hard as we can, but we aren’t doing this professionally; its free and I’m certainly not a professional trainer or coach, I don’t think any of the other coaches are either. We’re just people who want to share what we know; we’re learning the rest as we go. I hope its useful, and we’ll keep trying to make it better.

I'm sorry, I only just now read the email I received at around 5:30 confirming a spot was free, but by then it was too late to go or to change my RSVP. I apologise, I wish I had read the email earlier to release it... I am thus cancelling my place in the waiting list for number 2 and hope I can get a spot for the May event. Again, sorry...

    April 7, 2014

    • Gen A.

Hi Anna, no worries. We'll be prioritising those on the April waiting list for the May classes (Part 1 and 2).

Thank you! I'll keep my eye on it and book (as I am no longer on the April waiting list and appear as attendee). Thank you for organising these workshops!

My appointments calender shows I have 2 conflicting appointments during this same evening...???

I'm just wondering if I were to miss going along to tonight's Python programming Part I/would I still be eligible to sign up for, and, attend Python programming Part 2? The other question I have is...what if I were to miss going to both introductory Python meetings; would it still be possible to learn by studying doing the lesson material online...through following the links you've posted here?

Right now, I'm thinking I'll go(and, miss my other appointment). However, it also depends on exactly what is your reply...?

    April 7, 2014

    • Paul R.

First, thanks very much for your prompt reply. Yes, I already knew there would be a time conflict in regards to the other class; which I signed up for 'after' signing up for both Parts 1 & II. Frankly, I just couldn't quite make up my mind about which class is best to attend; because the truth is I wish to attend them both! What I've decided to do is ignore the other class; and, just attend the Python programming classes, instead; because the other class will still be running in later weeks to come; whereas, Introductory Python will be closed after just 2 weeks long. Look forwards to seeing everybody there later on during this evening. ;-)

      April 7, 2014

    • Paul R.

Got there too late, unfortunately! When I arrived everybody was just finishing. Anyway, I signed in; then, went upstairs to check; after confirming everyone was already gone home; I myself left.

    • Gen A.

Hi Peter, thanks for the update. Per earlier messages, if you are looking into the May class, please note those who have been on the April waiting list will be prioritized first for those classes, subject to a cap, based on number of coaches we can get for May.

Just got a spot, but didn't bring my laptop with me to work as I didn't think so many would drop out last minute. Hopefully I'll get on the list in May and make sure to carry my laptop whether I've got a spot or not just in case. A really shame :(

    April 7, 2014

    • Gen A.

No worries Krishma, see the reply I posted to Sanyaade below. Although if you can still get yourself to Skills Matter before 6:30pm, there's one organizer who can lend you a laptop.

Sorry I have to change my RSVP as I got your confirmation now and I having clashes with other things

    May the next one

    God blesses!!!

    Best regards,
    Sanyaade

    April 7, 2014

    • Gen A.

No worries Sanyaade, as mentioned we will prioritize those waitlisted in April for the May classes (in chronological order - from the oldest waitlister to the newest).

      April 7, 2014

  • Gen A.

An additional coach just came on board, so we've released a few more spots to those on the waiting list. Again if you just got confirmed and can no longer make it given the lead time, update your RSVP to No, there's still 30 people behind you who just might be able to attend.

    April 7, 2014

  • Gen A.

REPOSTING --> NOTE TO THOSE STILL WAITLISTED
--> If a place becomes available for you for this class (Monday, April 7), your RSVP will automatically be updated to Yes. If you are no longer able to make it, given the lead time before the class, please update your RSVP to No, as there are still around 40 people (as of this posting) waiting for a place.

With regards to UPDATES from Meetup and us organizers -->
You should get a notification and/or email from Meetup and/or organizers IF your settings on this page www.meetup.com/account/comm are set so that you receive:
    1) notifications/broadcasts/emails from organizers and
    2) notifications/emails about Meetups you have RSVP'd for (Yes or Waitlist)

Otherwise, your only option is to keep checking back and you might miss the next opportunity to sign up for the next class.

    April 6, 2014

  • Barcelonito

Hi, I'm checking this thread again and I see that it seems I may be waiting list, but something has changed on my notifications, not sure what exactly. Given the high number of interested people who would like to attend the session, but some people backing out due to time constraints or other plans, I would like to ask once more if I may join, but perhaps only observe the class and not directly engage with the coaches since they may be preoccupied with many people due to the high amount of people to be present today. Otherwise, I have heard of a possible move date to May, is that still a possibility?

Please let me know what is the best possibility to absolve this very useful programming session Python. :)

    Thank you

    April 6, 2014

    • Will D.

      Hi Gen,

As we are on the waiting list, will we get a notification from meetup.com about the May classes or do we have to keep coming back to check? Thanks

      April 6, 2014

    • Gen A.

Hi William, you should get a notification and/or email from Meetup and/or organizers IF your settings on this page http://www.meetup.com... are set so that you get:

people are so silly book on to a course they cannot do and can not focus on - why are you preventing people who want to learn by staying on the list - if you know from the beginning you could not do the coding course.

How you do something is how you do everything in your life.

    thank you

    April 5, 2014

    • Gen A.

A communciation has already gone out, from organisers, to those who RSVP'd Yes to update their RSVPs if they can't make it for Monday, an email which not everyone would receive. Rest assured that is part of our procedures. There's also the other factor of finding suitable coaches for learners, so as much as we would like to accommodate more learners per class, we have to strike out a balanced ratio between learners and coaches.

      April 5, 2014

I am not swiping at anyone, but i think a individual has to do better planning and take into other people into consideration, as it comes across as very selfish.

Yes, i will leave to you guys the organisers to make those who can do it are ready for it and are sure they want to do the course, aswell as being very committed.

    April 5, 2014

  • Barcelonito

hi I'd like to make it! I'm right across university to see you guys!

    April 4, 2014

    • Gen A.

Hi Adam, we've asked people who RSVP'd Yes to Monday's class to update their RSVP if they can no longer make it. There is a fairly large waiting list, and I know some people have already done just that, hence some people from the waiting list are now confirmed for Monday. We are also now looking into scheduling Beginner Python classes for May, and the priority will be people on the waiting list from the April classes, subject to a cap, of course, depending on how many coaches we can get for May.
