Introduction to Programming with Python

After running this workshop successfully once in Tel Aviv, twice in Berlin and more often in Melbourne and Stockholm, it is now offered again to the people of Tel-Aviv to get them started in programming using Python - no prior knowledge required. So if you are interested in learning programming hands-on and with amazing coaches around, using the great PythonTurtle workshop we've prepared for you, please sign up. And yes, it's free.

If you already know how to program and want to learn python, please come but do contact us in advance. Our team of coaches will prepare relevant learning materials (but only if we know you're coming). If you already know your way around python and would like to help others learn, we would like you to come as a coach. If that's the case, please (after rsvp-ing) talk to us, so we'll get to know you a bit and possibly increase our learner capacity.

You will need to bring your own laptop in order to participate with a recent python (2.7) installed. If you have a recent Mac or Linux, this is pre-installed, you are covered. If you are running Windows, please install from here, or let the organizers know in advance so they can help you set it up.

Because the number of seats is limited, it is important that you only sign up if you definitely plan on coming (and do so, too!). If you can't make it for any reason, please cancel your attendance on Meetup right away so your someone on the waiting list can take your place. Thanks!

We will be hosted once again by Hamifal, who are kindly providing us with the beautiful and comfortable learning space pictured below. The address is Bar-Yochai 5, Tel Aviv (map).

Due to requests, the workshop will begin at 19:00, half an hour earlier than originally published.

Wow! The waiting list is so long that even after more coaches will register and we increase the workshop size accordingly, there will still probably be some people left out because the venue can't accomodate so many. Don't worry - we're going to host this workshop again soon. In the meantime, please RSVP anyway in case more places appear, and please unRSVP if you can't make it, so that somebody else can take your place.

It says "1 spot available" but the RSVP's are closed. What it one to do? I'd like to attend.

It seems like meetup.com's automatic waiting list management is doing the wrong thing, it should have automatically accepted the first person on the waiting list. I accepted him manually.

Which text editor is most recommended for python?
(I usually prefer full featured IDEs, such as RubyMine for Ruby and InteliJ for Java)

What do i kneed to know to become a coach

    July 8, 2013

    • Yoni L.

      Hi Illu,
OpenTechSchool uses python for the classes, so we're looking for coaches with an overall working knowledge of python. Also, experience with python web development (django, flask) is useful for more advanced tutorials.

    Hi everyone,

I'm both sorry and happy to say that we've filled our available capacity for this meetup, and won't be able to accept new participants or coaches. We hope to repeat this this workshop in the future every few weeks, so stay tuned for further announcements.

If any of you have rsvpd, but think you will not be able to come, please cancel to give place to those in the waiting list.

    Thanks,
    Yoni.

Double checking - no previous experience or knowledge is required. right?

      July 8, 2013

    • Yoni L.

That's right, no previous knowledge of programming is expected.
Just bring a laptop with python 2.7 installed. And if you had any issues installing it, we can help too, just come a bit earlier than 19:00.

ok, thanx. i've done the django tutorial in the past, it was a long time ago though.

      July 5, 2013

    • Yoni L.

      Hi again,
If you felt comfortable doing the django tutorial yourself, then I think that you won't get much benefit from this meetup, and should un-rsvp. We do hope to host more advanced workshops in the future, but that'll take some time to organize.

On the other hand, if you want to brush up on your python a bit and then come help as a coach, it'll be great.

I have been a C programmer for over 35 years with some experience in C++ and Java. I am looking to expand my skillset so I signed up for the Python workshop. I do not own a laptop and being unemployed it is not on my shopping list since I have a strong Windows server. Any chance of sharing for the evening?

    July 6, 2013

    • Aur S.

It would be best if you can loan a laptop or netbook from a friend. If you can't, contact us near the event and we'll work something out.

Hey guys, I'm an IT guy who uses python a lot for his job. I know the basics of python, and would like to study it more in depth (creating modules, OOD, what's pypy, Django, Twisted, etc').

Here's an example of what I usually do:
    https://github.com/m1keil/Nagios-Plugins

    Can this workshop suit me?
    Thanks.

    July 5, 2013

    • Yoni L.

Hi Michael, I think it may benefit you to come and do our django tutorial, it will also help you understand modules and objects
