Poll Opened Responses

Members interested in purchasing pastured, locally, and humanely raised chicken...please vote.

We have the opportunity to purchase pastured, locally, and humanely raised chicken from Gonestraw Farms. Currently what would be available are stew hens, these are laying chickens that are past their prime, the meat is tough without slow, moist cooking, but they are very flavorful, and perfect for soups, stews, and crockpot recipes. There is also a possibility that they can raise broiler/fryer chickens for us; these are young chickens that are raised specifically for their tender meat. Currently, Gonestraw Farms feeds their chickens organic vegetables, but they cannot afford organic supplemental chicken feed at the current prices, so currently, their chicken cannot be labeled organic. The stew chickens will likely be priced at $12 each. Also...Gonestraw has plans to install a chicken cam! The chickens will be USDA processed.

Which fruits, tomatoes, herbs, etc. would we like in our shares?

The Guldseths would like to know which of these items we would like in our shares. Please rate them on a scale of 1-10, with one meaning "I hate it" and ten meaning "I love it." Please participate in the other poll where we choose the vegetables the Guldseths will be planting for us.

What vegetables would we like Guldseths' Farm to grow for us?

The Guldseths are letting us choose what vegetables we would like them to grow for our group. They have given us some options that are easiest for them to grow for a large number of people. Please rate the following vegetables on a scale of 1-10, with one meaning "I hate that - please don't bother growing it," and ten meaning "I love that - please hurry, I want some now." Please participate in the other poll to choose your favorite fruits, tomatoes, herbs, etc.

What is more important to you, supporting local farms, or receiving perfect produce?

Please read "Buying from Local Farmers: The Trade-off" on the message board before responding to this poll. Please think about it carefully before you answer. Locally grown organic produce from small farms is more nutritious because it is ripe when it's picked. When we buy local, we support our local economy, greatly reduce air pollution and dependency on oil. We vote with our dollar to help keep dwindling, family operated, small, organic farms alive. We pay local farmers 10-15% more than wholesaler. The produce is sometimes inconsistent, imperfect, and unpredictable. What is more important to you? Saving money and receiving consistent, produce that is picked early and travels an average of 1500 miles, OR supporting small, local organic farms who pick when ripe and sometimes produce inconsistent, less than perfect produce? Please be honest.
