Love to sing? What's stopping you?
The Organic Women's Chorus is ready to help you start again.
We are an informal and welcoming group of women who love singing together in community. Our weekly meetings are part singing, part support group, part family reunion, and another part singing!
The Organic Women's Chorus started in April, 2009 with a group of women who met at Women Making Music camp (more info at www.womamu.org) and wanted to sing together more regularly and locally.
We sing a variety of rounds and 3-part harmony songs from around the world, including South Africa, Georgia (the country), Germany, the Congo, Poland, Australia, and more. Some are even in English!
We are not affiliated with any religious or political group, although the members tend to be quite progressive-leaning, and like to sing songs with a slant towards peace, social justice, and organic vegetables.
We meet every Wednesday except for the first Wednesday of each month. New members are welcome to join us at any time. There is no audition or voice placement, just sing where you feel comfortable. You can even come and listen or lip-synch until you find your voice. Nobody will judge you, we will just be glad you are there.
Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m. (with NO MEETING the first Wednesday of each month)
Jen's house, email for address and directions
Please bring a bottle of water to keep your voice hydrated. Please avoid wearing perfumes or scented products, as these can affect some members' voices. Note: There are cats living in the house where we meet.
A Word About Performances:
In the chorus's first year, we performed at birthday parties, music camp (see above), a going away party, and onstage at the new Freight and Salvage in Berkeley (our 15 minutes of fame so far). Performing is always optional. There's no minimum number of rehearsals you have to attend, so long as you feel comfortable with the material being performed. Usually we are just singing for our own happiness, but bringing music to our friends and loved ones adds to that experience.
A Word About the Meetups:
I won't be scheduling meetups regularly but will try to send a message every month or so reminding people to come give the chorus a try if you haven't already. If there is a special event I'll put together an invitation so the meetup group website can automatically remind everyone. Just know that you are always welcome anytime, but don't come on the first Wednesday of the month unless you want to get recruited as a potential babysitter!
That's about it. If you've read this far, that probably means you really want to sing with us, even if you're not sure yet, so I'm sure I'll meet you soon. Take care and keep singing!
