Hello fellow organizers!

Join us for this afternoon full of interesting ideas, information and great advice! - We invited Scott Heiferman, Meetup.com´s CEO and founder for an interview followed by a Q&A and social mixer

It has been a very long time (almost 4 years, our first event in June 2009) since we had the pleasure of having Scott as our guest - see photo - and it is always great to hear his stories and advice on running groups, as well as his vision about meetup, current and future.

Organizer Will Petz, from Random Events meetup will be doing the interview and moderating - I (Néstor) will be welcoming you and assisting/helping from the backstage

HOW IT WORKS

Please arrive at 6.45 pm (and no later than 7 pm since we plan to start on time). Fill in a name tag with your name and your group´s name, enjoy the interview (30 min approx.) and feel free to ask questions afterwards. Stay with us for a social mixer, great chance to meet other organizers and ask any off-topic questions you may have. There are no event fees for this event

We truly hope you can join us - See you!

Néstor

I'm sorry Nestor, but after much back and forth, I'm still undecided about coming. I'm just not feeling entirely comfortable being there after Andrea closed, and then deleted the thread on the Discuss Organizer Forum where I invited organizers to join us tonight. She posted on that thread that questions to Scott would have to be approved and that RSVP comments should be respectful. Too bad in our own groups, all negative comments and lame excuses for a "No" RSVP, are NOW sent to all the members who RSVP'd "Yes". How does this help our events? It just creates a negative vibe.

This is really important and must be must be addressed.

Nestor, thanks for putting this together and for your efforts in case I decide not to come.

Scott, thanks for doing this and for addressing our concerns and hopefully I'll see you guys later. :D

Andrea, the support group received an e-mail from me detailing the comments problem on March 14. Since Meetup's agenda trumped my needs as an organizer, nothing was done, except to suggest I monitor my pages, which would require a 24/7 effort on my part.

I wonder if there's been any progress on the way comments in events are handled. How many disinterested inboxes will receive this comment?

    Hey Jonathan
How many meetups have u attended in the last 2.5 years and how has that changed ur life?
I've probably attended at least 30, met, skied, vacationed, and celebrated with at least a dozen of the best ski buddies I've ever met
We gone to vail, whistler, aspen, Breckinridge, Jackson hole and of course hunter mountain
I'm grateful to find these fabulous skiers!!!!
The meetup.com website could b a Lexus or a volt but it is the change in ur life that matters!
When u meet the people u want to, u become the person u want to b!
    Meetup and discover yourself!!!

Julia...Can't we enjoy the platform and also find ways to make it better? Jonathan's point is that the platform has become more difficult to use as perceived by Organizers and MU support has not responded to organizer concerns. Does it matter how many events you've attended using the platform (for the record I've attended over 110, hosting most of those, in the past 3-4 years)?

    I watched the interview online

Scott can talk a good game about the Meetup concept. Invite him to your next fundraiser! No mention of the fact that the website has experienced nothing but annoyances and missed opportunities for the last two and a half years. No matter how much beta testing Meetup does, it's no substitute for the customer focus necessary to operate a respected company.

I'd rather not click on all the impersonal "Good to see you" buttons, and there is no way I can eMail all that attended, but it WAS 'Good to see you' ALL and hope to see you again in the future..

    @Re-Tweet (from MU.com/MoonJs)
Good turn out and Scott was VERY friendly and went 'well' over the allotted time trying to answer everyone's questions... Which, in itself, was tough with 'so' many passionate people who wanted him to 'know' all about 'their' MeetUps before getting around to actually asking a question :)

Luckily, he has a patient nature and took it in his stride...

Thanks Scott for joining us - and to Nestor, Will, and all the MeetUp gang that were there for your time and effort...

I look forward to getting together with him again with 'our gang' - The MeetUp Organizers of NJ (the MoonJs). :)

    Nick the Brit...

Would someone mind posting a summary of the key points for the benefit of those who could not attend? Is a video available? Thank you.

Sorry that I can't be there to ask Scott why it's OK for Meetup to:

    (1) push our Sponsors down on the sidebar where they are now totally invisible and hidden below his list of "People in this Meetup are also in:" which he has pushed up into the Sponsor spot, and (2) why it's OK to do this without any warning whatsoever to Meetup Organizers who have contracts with their Sponsors and are no longer delivering what they have promised in positioning. If you haven't seen this yet, check out your group sidebars and weep!

    Hi Nestor.
Wish I could attend this event, but I'm too far away. I have a couple of questions for Scott if someone thinks they are worthy of fitting in: 1. With the new Chapterization feature rolling out soon, what is MU's objective? How will it impact individual group pricing and features?

    2. Does MU have any new organizer management tools it will be implementing soon? Moving RSVP comments to the wall has made it more difficult to organize events. Is there anything on the horizon to repair this?

    March 23, 2013

  • Nestor

of course I will - you will have the chance to ask questions too, like everyone else. It seems like meetup considers the organizer forums essentially as one more way to communicate between them and the organizers - and IMHO it never truly was. It was used mostly as a meeting point for organizers in different places to communicate with each other. I wish we could offer this groups´forum as a tool for that, but I don´t have a way to reach all organizers

    March 22, 2013

  • Ekaterina

Nestor, will you be asking Scott why he is closing the Discuss Meetup Boards on March 25th? The Organizers Forum has been a vital resource for Organizers for years. This is very sad. :-(

I could have sworn I signed up for this meetup before, but I didn't see my name on the RSVP list. So I signed up again.

Hi Nestor. After I responded to the question that I had for Scott, I thought of something else important. Meetup email seems to be on a big delay. Whenever someone RSVP's for an event, update's their response, makes a comment, etc. it takes a long time to be received. It is not within a few minutes, which could pose a problem when meetups are updated or cancelled at the last minute and/or RSVP's are changed near the event time.

    February 14, 2013

    • Ivy

Sounds like you can only ask questions about meetup in general...nothing related to customer service. I don't really know. Maybe they should send out a list of guidelines beforehand.

      February 20, 2013

    • Nestor

I will do it, and explain this before the interview. In the past we had questions that anyone can answer by simply emailing [masked] or in the help section. I would like to make the most of our guest´s time with us and our own time there too. This event isn´t to find out how to insert a photo inside the event description when I create a new event (for example). This time I plan to ASK attendees to please be considered with others and reserve those customer service questions for the proper event

Hi Nestor, I'm new at this and would like to build up the group, could use some practical ideas? Not clear on how the money and sponsors work either. Thanks and look forward to meeting with you, Richard
