Martial Arts World (map)
Silat is an umbrella term used to describe the martial art forms practiced throughout the Malay Archipelago. Silat is a combative art of fighting and survival and it has been evolved in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam civilizations for centuries into social culture and tradition. During the colonization era, both in Malaysia and Singapore as British Colonies and in Indonesia as Dutch colonies, practitioners (locally known as pesilat) used the martial art as a form to liberate from foreign authorities.
Pencak Silat is a grouping of martial arts found within the countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, and the Southern Philippines. That is to say, that the preceding countries could be considered source countries for the indigenous martial art known as pencak silat.
Pencak silat is nothing more than a blanket term for those indigenous martial arts. That is to say, that there are many different styles of pencak silat and many different emphases within those styles.
Pencak silat practitioners often utilize the following methods: evasion, striking, kicking, locking, throwing, ground fighting, weapons, spiritual, and societal training.
That said pencak silat is often viewed as a martial art that focuses on the use of weapons, and in particular, bladed weapons. It is often said, "that without the knife there is no silat."
About Silat Pertempuran:
Pencak Silat Pertempuran (Combat Silat - a form of Indonesian martial art) contains elements and aspects from various systems of pencak silat to include Sumatran, Maduran, Javanese, Malaysian, and Filipino. The headquarters is located in St. Cloud, Florida but group classes are available in several different locations across the US.
The instructor Guru Sean Stark has an extensive background with experience in Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Aikido, Military Combatives, Wu and Yang Tai Chi, Wing Chun, JKD, Kali, Arnis, Hok Kuntao and some Maphilindo and Mande Muda. In '98 Sean began studying Silat as a primary art in Raja Sterlak Silat with Guru Cruicchi and began studying Garrote Larense (a Venezuelan Machete art), in '99 Pamur Silat and was introduced to Jati Wisesa Silat and Serak Silat. From this and more Pencak Silat Pertempuran (PSP) was born into what Sean teaches today.

Update:
Sean will also be doing some stick work. Just simple stuff since this is the first time around. Don?t need more than a single stick and perhaps a training knife. No headgear necessary. The venue at Martial Arts World should have plenty we may be able to use and a few of my own we can use. If you want to purchase your own Kali/Escrima stick or rubber training knife East Coast Martial Arts Supply sells these to our members at a discount. Sticks are less than $7 each and training knifes are around $5 each. http://ecmas.info...
