The City of Winter Park Public Art Advisory Board is proud to announce the newest Art in Chambers exhibition featuring new paintings by Robert Ross. The exhibition, titled “Under Roof and Sky,” was inspired by Ross’s focus on our urban and rural environments. The exhibition will be open for public viewing from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the Commission Chambers and Room 200 at Winter Park City Hall located at 401 Park Avenue South. The exhibit will remain on display from June 12 through Sept. 12.
The public is invited to an opening reception with the artist Wednesday, June 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the Commission Chambers.
Ross says the paintings in “Under Roof and Sky” were inspired by scenes from Winter Park, Central Florida, Michigan and Istanbul, where he recently traveled. “The places I select to paint are unremarkable at first glance, but charged with life and beauty if you look closely,” Ross says. “I’m attracted to the intersections of natural and man-made forms, such as the way a roof carves a shape into the sky. I’m fascinated by light and shadows, particularly in the morning. And I’m drawn to the way colors talk to each other in a painting, whether side by side or on opposite sides of a canvas. My paintings invite the viewer to look at the forms and spaces around us with fresh eyes.”
Ross, who previously worked in public relations for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, recommitted himself to his lifelong passion for art several years ago, becoming a Studio Artist in Painting at Crealde School of Art in Winter Park and studying with renowned local artists and Philadelphia-based artist Stuart Shils. An Altamonte Springs resident, Ross works full time at his studio in McRae Art Studios in Winter Park.
Ross’s paintings have been exhibited in “Small Works by Central Florida Artists” at Anita Wooten Gallery, Valencia College, Orlando; “Citiescapes” at Orlando Museum of Art; “Art in the Chambers” at Orange County Commission Chambers; “Street Seen” at City Arts Factory, Orlando; Gallery at Avalon Island, Orlando; Casselberry Art House; and Hannibal Square Art and Folk Festival, Winter Park.
Recognition includes a four-page cover story in Winter Park Magazine (Oct. 2011); First Prize in Painting awarded by Crealde; and selection as a participating artist in the 2012 Winter Park Paint Out sponsored by Albin Polasek Museum.
