McRae Art Studios Holiday Open House

McRae Art Studios has 25 years of history in Central Florida. Located in Winter Park, it is a collective of 22 artists who maintain individual businesses in art, yet work as a group. Originally started in 1987 on McRae St in Orlando, founders George and Marty Whipple envisioned an affordable place for independent artists to work and mingle, while focusing community attention to the outstanding talent in the area. It has been at its current Winter Park address since 1998.

McRae strives to maintain the highest level of artistic accomplishment by bringing artists into the collective by a jury process. The artists of McRae have exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally, and through the years it has been home to numerous award winning artists.

Locally, McRae has produced shows with Brevard Museum of Art, Arts on Douglas Gallery, Orlando Museum of Art (First Thursday Show), Casselberry City Hall (Artists Program), Maitland Art Center, and Winter Park Public Library.

Twice a year, McRae Art Studios is open to the public via winter and spring open house events. Individual artist classes, workshops, and professional gatherings are held throughout the year.

As a special note Robert Ross, one of our members has been accepted as a collective member. This will be his first exhibit showcasing his work in his workspace.

About the Artist:
Robert Ross, a resident of Altamonte Springs, paints rural and urban
landscapes around central Florida. His landscapes are characterized by
light, shadows, color, simplified forms and painterly brushwork.

Artist’s Statement:
I strive to capture that moment of first perception, the thrill I feel
when I see how sunlight, shadows and color shape what I am looking at.
When I paint, I become immersed in the moment. Sight and action are
joined. Eye, hand and heart work together, somehow beyond my control.
Painting is a mysterious merger of mindfulness and empty mind.

I enjoy painting houses and the neighborhood around them. Although
there are no people in these paintings, I sense the presence of those
who live and have lived in the houses that I depict. These houses have
contained human lives and been the stages for their dramas, their
hopes and fears, their successes and failures, their marriages and
families. For me, houses and their yards have personalities as
distinctive as a person’s. I believe they have been shaped by those
who have lived there.
