Book Review by Ma Prem Geet (Sally Henderson)

TITLE: “THE FABRIC OF LIFE—On the Songs of the Mystic Kabir, Osho,”

Translated and edited by Vasant Joshi, PhD

Published by: OSHO Media International

A new masterwork has joined the world canon of spiritual literature: “THE FABRIC OF
LIFE—On the Songs of the Mystic Kabir, Osho,”
translated and edited by Dr.
Vasant Joshi, Osho’s personal biographer.

This wondrous celebration of elevated consciousness describes the human experience of dropping the ego and reaching inward to touch the divine. First published in Hindi in 1976 as “Suno Bhai Sadho,” Enlightened Mystic Osho’s extemporaneous talks on ten songs of the prolific  mystic Kabir are far more than inspirational, they are powerfully transformational.

“THE FABRIC OF LIFE” delivers an eternal treasure about Enlightenment, the process, the pitfalls, the elixir---for the first time in English. Appealing to mystics and scholars alike, Dr. Joshi’s illuminated book will till your heart-soil with a double dose of the divine. “THE FABRIC OF LIFE” is an incredibly rich tome that inspires multiple layers of engagement. All at once breathtaking, beautiful, and piercing, Osho explicates, line by line, the infinite depth of songs by Kabir, India’s most famous and beloved poet—a “common” man, a “simple” weaver, an Awakened One who lived some 500 years before Osho.

A luxurious read, “THE FABRIC OF LIFE” imparts a vast understanding of reality in an intimate way, as only Osho can. Spanning centuries, creeds, classes, and cultures, Dr. Joshi shows that these two Enlightened Mystics spoke the very same language of the Self, for both were human beings who had opened the “tenth door” and realized their infinite nature. To grasp the breadth of this monumental work, imagine a book in which Jesus could have offered his illuminated viewpoint on the Taoist poems of Lao Tzu or the words of Gautama Buddha, both of whom lived some five centuries before Christ. The historic scope, the total existential understanding, and the immortal perspective of these Osho discourses are intriguing, alchemical, and even magical. Dr. Vasant Joshi’s latest literary feat is a magnetic must-read for anyone on or near the path of consciousness. Like Joshi’s biography of his Master, “Osho Luminous Rebel—Life Story of a Maverick Mystic,”

“THE FABRIC OF LIFE” is also a must-have in the libraries of schools, colleges, and universities worldwide.

Throughout the book, Dr. Joshi reveals Osho’s potent phrasing beautifully in English.

Always dynamically homeopathic, Osho is indeed the Master of delivering the perfect “titration” of whatever words are needed to treat our sleepiness and self-deception. Even the Master’s shortest phrase can recalibrate the soul; for example, Osho says, “Every thought is a hole through which you lose energy.” This is only one stunning gem among hundreds in the book, all life-changers when we fully allow them in.

Each chapter begins with a masterfully translated sutra of Kabir, followed by the Enlightened Mystic Oshos’s full elucidation on the given sutra.

Osho, in his own inimitable way, drills down, phrase by phrase, on each of the ten precious songs. The result is a rare, poetic feast, especially for the West and speakers of English-only!

Consider it a luxury to be escorted through Kabir’s poetry line by line, as if personally escorted by Osho himself. The warm tone of the natural, language feels as though the Enlightened Master is sitting with you and speaking directly to you when he says: “The treasure is available right this moment, but you have not paid any attention to it. It has always been showering – it is the very nature of life that the elixir goes on showering endlessly.”

Kabir, a rustic villager who left behind some 500 piercing songs, uses vernacular language and simple imagery to create a democratic sense of the divine.

Singing to everyone, not just the erudite, Kabir makes us feel that the divine is within our each. Rich or poor, educated or illiterate, Hindu or Christian, anyone can instantly relate to Kabir’s imagery. What better metaphor to wake up the narcissistic mind than a frenzied dog barking in a hall of mirrors and attacking itself. This is visceral, unforgettable poetry at its best, where familiar images--dog, parrot, and elephant-- become brand new and ignite understanding. According to Osho, the mystical poet is one who has “arrived.” Having arrived, Kabir injects raw spiritual power into his seemingly ordinary words; he unhinges our old patterns and reshapes our consciousness, all in the space of a line or two. Kabir sings, “You have yourself forgotten the self. Like a deluded dog, trapped in a palace of mirrors, ends his life barking at his own image.” Osho’s shining elucidations and Kabir’s haunting images stick to the mind and insist on a permanent home in our understanding.

A long-time Osho sannyasin, Dr. Joshi was initiated into disciplehood on January 11, 1975.

It’s obvious that Dr. Joshi had to have lived this message deeply from his own being in order to translate the Enlightened Master’s message so beautifully and naturally. Dr. Joshi spent decades as the heart-listener to the Master’s presence. He’s fully absorbed the glimmering silences between Osho’s spoken discourses (now in 700 books) and the sung words of Kabir (500 songs). For over 40 years, Dr.Joshi has been Osho’s chosen story-keeper. As a disciple, scholar, and author, Dr. Joshi serves as the essential weaver of this timeless synthesis of enlightened clues. He performs far more than any editor or translator could have because his own soul is int

rinsically involved in the delivery. Like Kabir, Dr. Joshi has spun colorful threads from the lives of two Awakened Beings into one seamless translation. The art of this amazing book lies in Joshi’s ability to join his vast knowledge of Osho with a rich capacity to render the halting beauty of Kabir’s poetry. Joshi’s editorial economy is perfection. “The Fabric of Life” is ultimately a sacred, ontemporary tapestry of two Enlightened Masters and their words, both passed down from oral, not written, traditions. Joshi’s life and artistry have bridged these Awakened Masters to each other, revealing the naked experience of truth they both communicate. Explaining his shared view of awareness with Kabir, Osho says, “The moment consciousness joins the insignificant, the insignificant becomes vast.”

Osho also reveals how Kabir himself is like the three sacred rivers of India that braid together, for Kabir contains all three paths of bhakti (devotion), karma (service), and jnana (knowing) within himself.

This delightful work also weaves the three magnificent spirits of Osho, Kabir, and Joshi into one mighty spiritual current, but as a great biographer, Dr. Joshi remains well-hidden in his subjects.

With a rare gift for creating a feeling of intimacy with the person of Osho, Dr. Joshi has claimed, “Osho is not a person, Osho is a phenomenon.” Through elegance and knowledge, Joshi delivers the reader at the feet of the Divine. He puts us in the closest proximity possible to understanding the human Divine Ones until we can all WAKE UP for ourselves! Joshi is somehow able to transfer Osho and Kabir’s friendliness and approachability to the written page. He even makes their illumined states seem somehow familiar, like a remembrance--a truly divine gift. Thanks to Joshi’s masterful translations, the 500 years that separate Osho and Kabir seem completely irrelevant to the message.

Reality, epiphany, and delight continually spill over from these pages so rich they can be read over and over again. For those on the path of self-realization, this is quite possibly the only book you will ever really need. The Masters show us that truth is never actually revealed, for it is always there. But sometimes, we manage to lift the veil and SEE for a moment what they SEE all the time.

The emphatic images and potent phrases are so fundamentally real and existential that they will always translate to the individual while transcending time, place, culture, class, and creed. Page after page, the illuminated words of Osho and Kabir bring about a visceral gasp, a shriek of delight. The reader can look forward to a joy ride as “THE FABRIC OF LIFE” message “gets in,” shakes you up, and zaps you with epiphanies about the way things really are. This most rare book surrounds the reader in its own universe to activate, quicken, and transform consciousness. Insisting that the reader travel inwardly, “THE FABRIC OF LIFE” is a truly interactive experience! So find a comfortable reclining chair and buckle your seatbelt! This magical, eye-opening read sparks roaring laughter and a river of tears.

The impact of “THE FABRIC OF LIFE” is so intense that it’s much like a powerful plow tilling up the hardened soil of a forgotten field so that something beautiful can grow.

The effect of this book is so unusually transformative that one cannot simply peruse it. Like a rare wine, this sacred transmission must be approached with celebration, followed by ample quiet time for contemplation. Also visually beautiful, the book design and ancient cloth-like cover create an aura of mystery and warmth.

“THE FABRIC OF LIFE” is a monumental masterpiece, and the culmination of Dr. Vasant Joshi’s life of devotion, study, and meditation.

Every chapter is a Rolls Royce of beauty, joy, and truth, thanks to the loving and perfect articulation of Vasant Joshi, also known by his sannyasin name, Swami Satya Vedant.

Clearly, “THE FABRIC OF LIFE” is a masterwork with many layers of awakened consciousness at play. This timeless treasure should be placed in a time capsule and sent to outer space with the message, “The Very Best of Planet Earth!” “THE FABRIC OF LIFE” offers entrance into the mystical atmosphere of powerful secrets kept by Awakened Souls. It offers a direct experience of the infinite Self and a magical touch from those illuminated ones who have always been and will always be. Once again, Dr. Vasant Joshi has created a literary masterpiece, a crystal doorway through which the coolest, fullest moonlight of the East pours lavishly on the West.
