Welcome to the OTD* Meetup!
We are a group of individuals from formerly Orthodox Jewish backgrounds who meet on a regular basis for good food, thoughtful conversation, and for making new friends. Most of us were raised with strong attachments to Jewish observance, but--while we are each on our own journey--now live mostly secular lives. Our past unites us, and we take from it what we still find meaningful, but we otherwise live simply as members of the world community.
We are always eager to meet new people who have an interest in the OTD Community, whether formerly Orthodox or not, so feel free to join this group even if you're not sure you're a perfect fit. We're a friendly bunch, and appreciate people from all backgrounds.
At this time, we try to organize at least two events per month, one in NYC and one in Rockland-Bergen County. Events include but are not limited to: dining out, pot-luck dinners, meeting for a movie, attending musical performances and other cultural events, or anything else our members are interested in. We're always looking for new experiences, so suggestions are welcome and encouraged. At this time, most of our meetups take place during weekends.
We hope you will join us. If you have questions, please drop us a note by clicking the "Contact" button to the left.
Please note: while there is no fee to join our group, we ask that you contribute $1 per event (for events you choose to attend) in order to cover the meetup.com admin fee.
You must be a minimum of eighteen years of age to join our meetup events. Most events are adults-only. Some events are kids-friendly. Unless explicitly specified, event are adults-only.
(*OTD stands for "Off the Derekh"--or off the path of Orthodox observance.)
Screening process to protect group members identity:
-All group members can attend events taking place on Shabbat.
-Only “vouched” group members can attend events taking place on weekdays/weeknights.
How to become a “vouched” member (only one of the three options required):
1) A current “vouched” group member vouches for you.
2) Attend a Shabbat meetup event.
3) Meet in person with an organizer or an assigned vouched group member.
