Hi there and welcome to the Outdoor Activity Group. (OAG)

Why Don't You Just Switch Off Your Television Set and Go Out and Do Something Less Boring Instead?

No doubt many of you will remember this from the TV program many years ago. It was a program for Kids back then but the concept has never been more relevant today and not just for the kids.

Do you want to get out of the house more, get more exercise, have some fun and meet new people? The group has been setup to help you do just that. We are a relatively informal group which offers a number of activities (depending on the time of year) such as Walking, Hill Walking, Running,  Kayaking, Climbing (indoors and outdoors) Cycling, Navigation and Survival Skills and much much more.

THE GROUP ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE FREE FOR MEMBERS. On occasion we will run an event at a location where entry fees etc are required but these are paid by members directly to that venue. Parking fees, Transport costs, Lunch costs etc are the responsibility of members. All our Winter Skills, Navigation, Survival and Geocaching courses are free but members are required to bring some materials such as map and compass whistle etc. Members will be informed about any particular equipment required in the description of events.

To become a member we request that you do just a couple of things.

Firstly we require that put a photograph of yourself (and only yourself no group photos etc) as your main profile picture from which you can be clearly and easily identified from. This applies to ALL our members. The reason for this is to ensure the safety and security of our members, prevent fraud and to protect the many benefits available to members from being abused by non members.

Secondly, we require that our members login and access the group site at least once every 90 days. (There is no requirement to join an event during the 90 days just that you login and visit the site. This allows us to keep our membership list up to date and prevents having huge numbers of members who have never joined an event or even looked at the site for years. The system automatically deletes accounts after 90 days of activity ensuring we have the most up to date  information about member numbers. We believe these two requirements are not too much to ask from our members.

Although many of our organizers and hosts may have formal qualifications and certification and tons of experience in the types of events we run, our activities are not advertised as being run with professional instructors or guides. Think of it more as a meeting of friends old and new with a common interest in a walk or activity which can be done as a group. Members are primarily responsible for themselves and their but we do look out and look after for each other along the way to ensure you will have an amazing time when with us.

Who should join our group?

That’s easy anyone who wants to give it a go and try something new. Kids are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult for the entire duration of the event. People who want to have a fun and exciting day out in a relaxed manner. People who want to get stuck in and take part in sports and events they wouldn’t normally do especially on their own. We are a very friendly bunch and like to have new members who will quickly become friends. The events we run do become very addictive so beware. We aim to be as inclusive as possible to accommodate everyone although some events may be unsuitable for some members as a result of the practical nature of what we do. Beginners are catered for and it is useful to tell hosts if you are new to a activity you want to join.

Who shouldn’t join the group?

This is also easy. We pride ourselves in being a group which caters for just about everyone. If you are a HARDCORE,   VERY FAST OR COMPETETIVE, Walker, Climber OR CYCLIST etc then this group May not be suitable. It’s not for those who want to run up hills to fulfill a tick list without taking in the views just to get to the pub for 2pm. NO SUPER HEROES. Fitter and Faster members do join the group for many events but we run our events in a way that allows new members to get involved and especially on hills and mountains we walk at paces which allows them to take part so elite walkers might find our group too slow. This goes for all our events (Unless specifically stated otherwise) So whether running, cycling, climbing walking or whichever activity you take part in it will be done at a level or pace governed by the slowest or weakest member on the day. The group is also only suitable for those who can abide by the rules and regulations we set and not those set by other meetup or local groups. The safety of our members takes precedence over everything else.
Members should be very realistic about their abilities and only join activities which they are capable of doing.

Other Information.

So feel free to join us and enjoy the activities. The only barrier for many of the group’s activities is you turning up, you need to be there to take part. Many of the start points for the activities will have easy access by public transport but occasionally places further away will mean using private cars and we are grateful for anyone who can offer lifts. Members are responsible for any travel expenses or accommodation costs involved.

As new members will join all the time the chances are you won’t be the only person taking part for the first time.

ACTIVE MEERCATS – This is the name we give our members because although this is a meetup group we try to be more than that. We are very proud of the fact that members really do take care of themselves and each other, working together to ensure we all have a great time when out and about. We don't run the group purely as a show up and go type group we pride ourselves in being a friendly group from start to finish so you are not left feeling alone or isolated. We enjoy the fact we all do things together as a group.

We have a ZERO Tolerance policy about abuse of any kind and any members participating in any such activity will be removed immediately from the group. We are happy to hear your Feedback about our organizers and hosts. Good or bad we want to know about your experiences. This can be done anonymously by emailing organizers to let them know about anything which you feel is important when you are attending an event. Your comments will be dealt with confidentially.
