This hike is on page 60 of my "60 Hikes Within 60 Miles" book. Just another hike that myself and others can check off their list. With the Switzerland hike coming up in June this is a chance to get the quads in shape.
There is an easy route for people who would like to do about 1-1.5 hours and for others (which is what I'm doing) we'll loop back, over the dam and down the other side of the river, and then back the way we came to the parking lot. Now I've never done this hike before and this is what my "book" tells me...
Flat and easy. Travel through lowlands and floodplains; great view up and downriver from the dam. The trails follows the main channel and backwaters of the Mississippi. The east bank of the trail connects with other trails that extend beyond the park (anyone up for an adventure?)
DIRECTIONS:Take I-94 north past I-694 to MN 252. (MN 252 then becomes MN 610 just before it crosses the river.) Turn left (west) onto West River Road and go 1/2 a mile to Russell Ave (MN 12). Turn right (north) on Russell for about 3/4's of a mile to find the park entrance on the right. Park at the northernmost parking lot.
CARPOOLING: I can pick people up in the parking lot behind Macaronni Grill. That's located off Hopkins Crossroads near Staples, Michael's and Dick's. - Sue
Mark J's comment is accurate: There is NOT an exit from Hwy 252 to West River Road. If you are coming from the south, it's better to take the 85th Ave exit and go north on West River Road for about 2 1/2 miles to Russell.

I don't think there is an exit off 610 to W River Rd. There is one for EAST river rd - don't get mixed up!

Your directions aim you to the west side of the dam. The map shows going to the east (Coon Rapids) side. Which is correct?

OK the dam will be closed for this hike as they are rehabing it. But we are still doing to go. If you look at the Three Rivers Park District web site you'll be able to what is open and what isn't.
