OSL's Own Hike It! at Lilydale

We'll start from the river bottom and ascend up to Bruce Vento Overlook. Along the way we'll divert along some paths that led to some of this parks hidden treasures.

One of the best times to hike this park is when there are very few leaves on the trees. With no leaves one gets to see all the hidden treasures in this park. Here's a hint...did you know that about a billion, zillion years ago Minnesota was below the equator and its climate was sub-tropical, or that Minnesota once lay at the bottom of a shallow sea? This is a moderate hike with some steep areas along the trail. Please bring water bottles and wear good hiking shoes. Also, if you have a hiking pole it might not be a bad idea to bring at least one. I was grateful for it on the hike down, as it can get steep in some spots.

For those interested in a bite to eat afterward - please post a site if you are aware of one.  I'll update later as to a possible place.

I was also saddened and my heart went out to those involved. It is not far from where I am living. Hwy 13 is rerouted North of me with recovery efforts.
It was a fun time hiking there when you hosted the group.

    Hey Sue
I was thinking the same thing. I'm not a soils engineer, But as a building inspector I have had experience with unstable soils. I had several thoughts that this area could be a hazard. As soils absorb rain water. The will be a point where soil turns from a solid to a liquid. This is called the liquid limit. That is when the hills will slide. My heart goes out to the Families, the Teachers and School mates. I am sure the teachers wanted to provide the students with a fantastic day of finding fossils and exploring the out of doors.

I have to write and say how sad I feel about today's event at Lilydale Park. I am so glad that we had postponed this event when there was rain. My heart and prayers go out to the families and the children.

I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to make it either. I have to take care of some errands this evening in preparation for a picnic tomorrow, and depending on how early I can leave from work to get them done I might not be able to get everything done this evening and also squeeze in a hike.

    May 6, 2013

  • Mary

I may not be able to make it. Yesterday I decided to break in my new hiking shoes on a walk and ended up with a blister on both feet. Ouch!

Down with a cold. Have fun! I'll catch the next hike.

The "carb fest" has been rescheduled to Monday night at 5pm.
    Hope to see you there.

    Dave

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please join me at 5 pm for a "carb fest meetup" at Buon Giorno Deli (35E and Rte 13) tomorrow prior to the 6:30pm hike.

They have a great pasta bar, the pasta is fresh cooked to order, plus sandwiches and pizza. They can seat about 50 people inside and maybe another dozen outside, but they can get very busy, so the closer to 5pm you arrive, the better.

    See their menu at http://www.bgimarket.com/ShowMe...

Buon Giorno - 5 pm - Friday, May 3,[masked] Sibley Memorial Highway
    Lilydale, MN 55118
Adjacent to the Holiday/Subway at 35E and Rte 13.

Any questions, please call me at [masked].

I think I've made a good call on postponing this hike until Monday. Hopefully you all will agree with me. Not sure I'll want to load up on carbs beforehand, but afterwards is a definite possibility.

I'm going to need to stay comfy cozy tonight to get though this weather. I'd love to go on this same hike another time.

This is Dave Olson, reporting 'live" from Lilydale. Lot's of "white stuff" falling from the sky and it ain't pecorino romano cheese, so this evening's "carb fest" at Buon Giorno is cancelled. Ciao.

I am new to this "officialhiking" -- is a good pair of tennis shoes out of the question? How long (mile wise) is the hike?? Please respond!

    April 21, 2013

    • Debbie

Thanks Tom! Great info! I am wrestling with the idea of either playing pickleball or hiking...

      April 27, 2013

    • Tracy

Hi Debbie, if you don't have official "hiking boots", I've also found that tennis shoes with good traction on the bottom (things to grab the dirt) also work. I've never done this hike, but the ankle support of boots is helpful if you're like me, often distracted looking around and not at the ground! Tracy
