Hike Afton State Park w/a Beanie Weenie Roast Afterwards

Join Chip and I for a 4.5 miles hike at Afton for some fall color viewing of wooded areas with stands of oak and maple.  We will make our way up to some of the highest points in the northern section of the park with a lookout over the Southwest area of the park ravine. After heading north then east a bit, the St Croix vista becomes more visible with great view.

After the hike, Cheryl is providing us with some Chili and hot dogs to roast over a big open fire pit.  You're more than welcome to bring food to share.  If not, just enjoy some chili and hot dogs by a warm fire.  I will have warm apple cider for beverage afterwards.

Difficulty: Moderate level hike due to elevation changes of ~300 ft in less than 0.5 miles. Easy along the upper meadows and lowlands once we make the elevation changes. We will take our time and take water breaks.

Scenery: Mature oak forests, prairies, ravines and impressive vistas of the St Croix River.

Trail Surface: Paved surface, wide grassy paths and some narrow uneven surfaces along ravines.

Dogs are always welcome!

Please bring some water for breaks after we ascend to the top of the bluff.  Great place to bring your camera for some great fall color scenery along the St Croix.  As always, it's best to dress in layers so you can shed as you warm up.  Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

A reminder that a State Park sticker is required for Afton State Park.  You can get a $5 day pass or better yet an annual pass to all the State Parks for only $25.  If anyone is interested in carpooling let us know.

Directions:

From downtown St. Paul, head east on I-94 for 9 miles to MN 95 (Exit 253).  Go south 7 miles to Military Road (CR 20).  Turn east and continue for 3 miles to the park entrance.

Okay so a whole bunch of you lovely folks did not show and did not change your RSVP. Arghh! We had a wonderful time but I wish people could do a better job at changing their RSVPs when they are unable to attend events. I purchased much more food and hot dogs than were needed. That being said, we had a great time. Hope to do this again soon! Thanks everyone for coming out - lots of good laughter and strange encounters in those woods! And, of course, as always - the people are what make these events so special.

Thanks to Cheryl for doing a great job as substitute leader. A wonderfully colorful Autumn hike - made all the more enjoyable by the fellowship of a great group of hikers!

So, I purchased 30 hot dogs and buns and there are another 15 signed up through the other group. If everyone plans on attending, could someone please pick up another pack of hotdogs and buns? I'm not sure if I have enough. We will still hike but do our potluck indoors. See you there - wear layers and bring an umbrella - it might be a damp hike but it will be a great time!

Louie - hope you feel better SOON. We will do this again!

    Hi everyone,

The hike is still on rain, snow or shine. I am dealing with some sciatica right now, so if I am not there Cheryl will be leading it. Please update your RSVP if not attending so Cheryl knows how many to expect. Thanks!!

OSL's please note that I am bringing hot dogs and chilli for a beanie/wienie roast after the hike. Afton has the perfect place to do this! Please feel free to bring something to contribute. I noted on the GOGS site that it would be nice if someone could commit to ketchup and mustard. Look forward to seeing all of you there!
