Join Chip and I for a 4.5 miles hike at Afton for some fall color viewing of wooded areas with stands of oak and maple. We will make our way up to some of the highest points in the northern section of the park with a lookout over the Southwest area of the park ravine. After heading north then east a bit, the St Croix vista becomes more visible with great view.
After the hike, Cheryl is providing us with some Chili and hot dogs to roast over a big open fire pit. You're more than welcome to bring food to share. If not, just enjoy some chili and hot dogs by a warm fire. I will have warm apple cider for beverage afterwards.
Difficulty: Moderate level hike due to elevation changes of ~300 ft in less than 0.5 miles. Easy along the upper meadows and lowlands once we make the elevation changes. We will take our time and take water breaks.
Scenery: Mature oak forests, prairies, ravines and impressive vistas of the St Croix River.
Trail Surface: Paved surface, wide grassy paths and some narrow uneven surfaces along ravines.
Dogs are always welcome!
Please bring some water for breaks after we ascend to the top of the bluff. Great place to bring your camera for some great fall color scenery along the St Croix. As always, it's best to dress in layers so you can shed as you warm up. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
A reminder that a State Park sticker is required for Afton State Park. You can get a $5 day pass or better yet an annual pass to all the State Parks for only $25. If anyone is interested in carpooling let us know.
From downtown St. Paul, head east on I-94 for 9 miles to MN 95 (Exit 253). Go south 7 miles to Military Road (CR 20). Turn east and continue for 3 miles to the park entrance.
