Canoe/Kayak the Cannon River

Not interested in biking the morning of August 2nd, but still want to get out and do something. How about canoe or kayak the Cannon River?

This will be a leisurely[masked] hours paddle from Cannon Falls to Miesville Ravine Park, with a return shuttle included in the cost.

Cost: $35 per canoe or $25 per kayak, which includes life jackets and paddles. If you have your own canoe/kayak and just want shuttle service there is a cost of $20 per unit for that. If we get more than 25 people we can get a small discount.

We can meet in the first parking lot as you enter Lake Byllesby Regional Park, and carpool over to the canoe rental. We'll leave the parks parking lot a little bit before 9am, as it's a very short distance away. If running late here is my number[masked] or just meet us at the canoe rental.

The web site has obviously more info and good directions on how to get to the put in spot or if you're running late. Pick 10am for the departure time. http://www.cannonfallscanoeandbike.com/

Do we need to make reservations for the kayaks ? They offer an 8 and an 18 mile trip. The 8 mile takes about 3 hours to complete and the 18 mile trip takes about 7 hours to complete

    July 16

    • Len

18 mile trip sounds much more appealing, 8 is just too short...

    • Len

We did an eight mile trip today and it was perfect: no shallow areas except a small one!:)

Hello all' I grew up in Cannon Falls & graduated at Red Wing High. So, this opportunity is great! Cal or someone can follow me to drop off my truck where the shuttle pick up is? I can save 5 people $20.00 each by bring them back to their cars. I've got my own Kayak. My cell[masked]

I’ll be bringing my own gear. Does anyone else have their own kayak, want to borrow a kayak/gear, and want to run the shuttle to avoid the fee?

    July 3

    • Grady

Not a problem. I'm sure there will be some others to get a shuttle going.

      July 28

I have my own gear and interested in avoiding shuttle fees...

Hi, Does someone want to share a canoe, so one reservation can cover two people in a canoe? Or if someone has already reserved a canoe, do you need a second person for the front or back? I will be at the Lake Byllesby camping meetup.
    Thanks!

Took a nasty tumble last night while walking my son's family dog. End result: a scraped up face and a cracked bone in my wrist. Grr! No kayaking for me for a while. %#?!#. I cancelled my reservation. Hopefully I'll black in the swing of thing in a few weeks. Have fun!

I Live 200 yds. Upstream from Cannon Canoe & Bike. I will only need a shuttle.
I paddled that stretch, this last Saturday, very shallow. The Cannon dropped 2’ at Miesville Ravine Park in the last week. Did not have to get out and walk, but put new scrapes in my canoe, and had many spots too shallow to paddle. Trip took less than 90 minutes.

    July 21

    • Len

Cal: please monitor water levels and keep us posted - we don't want to get our yaks/canoes get scraped!

      July 22

    • Cal B.

The Cannon is still very low. The level at Northfield is[masked]’ above sea level and at Welch it is +4.31’. In our back yard it has dropped about 6” since I canoed the stretch about 10 days ago. I used a fairly high volume solo canoe that was empty. I did NOT have to get out and carry my canoe in the rocky stretches. Not sure how much displacement with a kayak. I took a look at the Sunset Trail landing 0.6 miles upstream from the Meisville Park landing last Thursday. It was down about 9” from 7/19.
I will not be able to make it Saturday. I had a family commitment out of town, come up.

    Thanks for clarifying, Sue.

Just a reminder for everyone who plans on renting a canoe or a kayak. You MUST make your own reservation. I will not be making them for you. There are 52 people saying they are going and several having their own equipment, so for the rest please, please make a reservation if you plan on attending. Showing up without a reservation may not work!

There were about 3 places that the current crossed sand bars and it was very shallow. Most of the river was fine. There has not been much rain on the Cannon or Straight since the 4th. The cannon has been holding steady at 891’ above sea-level at the MN19 Bridge at Northfield. At Welch it is +4.61 from the datum. In my back yard the river has fallen to pre-spring levels. There were sandbags around our house the 3rd week of June.
I would be in favor of the trip to US 61- river mile 6.8(L). The DNR has 8 parking spaces there. The take out at Meisville Ravine is at a sand bar at the mouth of Trout Brook--river mile 18.5(L). It is an easy take out, the shuttle busses from Welch Tubing put in there & Cannon Canoe picks up there. The busses pull over on the side of the road to load & unload. Parking is on the other side of Trout Brook, a bit of a walk or a wade across Trout Brook.
