No need to have a State Park sticker for this one. It's the last weekend of the Afton Alps Fall Fair, so we can attend the festivities after the hike and the sweetest part...is we can park in the Afton Alps parking lot.
For this hike we'll be taking a seldom used trail which has a big hill right off the bat. The trailhead is right by the bottom ticket shacks at Afton Alps and you really have to look for the trailhead to find it.
We'll go up the side of the hill (and I recommend hiking poles for this portion), then hike around the hilltop before descending down to the creek floor. From there it's more hills until we reach the meadow at the top of the hill. From there it's flat going as we head towards the St Croix River. We'll go down towards the river, up another hill to the parking lot by the Visitors Center and then take another hill down again towards Afton Alps. We'll then kinda sorta jump over a slight barrier by the Meadows Chalet and walk back to the Main Chalet for some rest and it can be done by taking a hayride. The hayride will take us along some of the route we hiked.
If you haven't taken a hayride before here's your chance and it takes you past some familiar scenery along the State Park/Afton Alps boundry line.
This will be a long hike of probably over 6 miles, so please make sure you have the appropriate footwear, snacks and lots of water. If it rains on Saturday we'll move the hike to Sunday, October 11th.
