2013 - Twin Cities Skyline Hike

Come along on a local Twin Cities Hike with a twist! Join me and other OSLers on a Hyland Park Reserve Ski lift ride high atop Mt Gilboa overlooking Richardson Nature Center and Normandale Lake. Enjoy the remaining colors of Fall in the Twin Cities as we view the City Skyline. Bring your camera !!

Hike length: ~ 6.5 miles.

Hike Speed: ~3-3.5mph, with periodic stops that I am known for.

Elevation Change: TBD (1020' above sea-level)

Dogs: No, Sorry, not this Meetup Event.

Get a first hand look at what Twin Cities Ski Jumpers see - All before the first snowflakes fall !! There will be activities at the top such as Telescopes, BBQ, etc After the ride we'll choose from any of the 18 miles of Park Trails, and head off as a group. We'll hike for 2-3 hours and likely see a sunset.

We'll loop around the East side of the Park and go deep into the woods passing through a section of native Minnesota Grasslands.  Passing Richardson Nature Center, we'll continue to stop-n-go as we admire the beauty of this park.

Looping Hyland Lake we'll start to head back watching the sun start to set.

The hike for 3 hours +/- and likely finish at or just into sunset.

Though We've hit a streak of just beautiful weather each year -- This meetup will be weather dependent and emphasis will be placed on Park officials canceling the Ski Lift Ride. If weather dictates a cancellation, I will cancel it on the calendar and also email the "YES" and "MAYBE" RSVPs.

Please be considerate and change your RSVP if your plans change prior to the Hike. This way someone else can take your place. If you RSVP "YES," we will be looking for you at the start. If you're not going to make it, please change your RSVP accordingly.   Thank You!!

DIRECTIONS:

From the West go I494 East OR From the East go I494 West - From the North go Hwy100 South to Normandale Blvd to W 84th Street (first stop light).

Turn Right (Go West) continue to Chalet Road (South of 84th St). Turn Left (Go South) continue to Hyland Ski Area Chalet (HSSA).

Look for the BIG Crowd!!

I'm sorry to hear about everyone who was driving in from the East side of town and got stuck in I494 road construction. There was quite a problem last weekend for many of you that I found out about afterward. We will have to try to Post road closure, construction, and other related travel issues from MN DOT and word of mouth into a Discussion Page.

Hey Minnesotans, Hope you're enjoying the State Fair! I have an Update for all of you that I recommend. First, this hike typically goes into sunset and there has always been someone that comments 'bring headlamps' or some kind on flashlight. Well, this year, I am going with the flow & getting ahead of those comments. Headlamps are better than a flashlight, or using your phone since it will keep your hands free! That is especially good if you're thinking about bringing hiking poles. Moreover, with the coming of shorter days, Fall hikes, Winter Snowshoeing, and more, its really a good investment!

We Hit 101 Yes - RSVPs earlier today! Wow, I saw that and was all smiles. I recognize 57 of you and am looking forward to meeting the rest of you as well as your +1s! What makes me even more excited is to see so many returning members, like Jerry (and his +1), Mark, Tom, Liz and a few others who have come to not just my other events but also several of my previous Skyline hikes from years past. Did you know you can look back at the photo albums from previous activities? It is alot of fun!

So, there will not be a chairlift ride or food/drinks Sunday. Please bring fluids for the hike, and whatever trail snack is your preference. Instead there is going to be a Ski/Snowboard swap inside the chalet building. I believe it starts at 11am and finishes at 4 or when it slows downs to no more attendees. There is ample parking and at 2:30/3pm when we'll be meeting, it will be winding down so no reason to expect any issues. I don't see any reason to dress with more than two (light) layers, and actually think one may be sufficient. Use your judgement.

The Skyline Hike Sunday is just going to be a hiking activity with a good amount of socializing as you might suspect cause of the size group that I'll be leading. Note the start time is 3pm so we have plenty of daylight and will likely finish before or at sunset. The Fall colors are truly spectacular at the park as are the views from the peaks in the park. Please do your best to arrive on time, and look for the large group. Please again update your RSVP if there is a change to your plans!

Hey everyone, its exciting to see how many are going to be attending. Just some updates to make. Weather is looking to be over-the-top fabulous Sunday with not a cloud in the sky, sunny and seasonally pleasant temps. Tomorrow (Friday) looks like some rain that may extend into Saturday. So, our Meetup looks to be awesome. Please update your RSVP if you have any change in plans.

Can I bring my 11 year old as plus one?

Hi Sarah, Yes you can bring your 11 yr old to this Meetup. Now, let me qualify this since I know many other of the outdoor & hiking Meetup Groups (such as Twin City Hikers, Avid PAC, BWCA PAC) have rules against +1s, Dogs, Kids under 18, and other things related. Here at OSL, Sue, LeeAnne, and I want everyone to enjoy themselves, meet some new friends, and share their positive experience with others. I cannot guarantee your 11 yr old will have a good time, I cannot guarantee your 11 yr old will meet others close in age, and I cannot guarantee your 11 yr old will meet others with children. On other Group outings I have organized, everyone (including me) have been welcoming to all of all ages. Like any other Meetup, please be sure yall are ready for the activity. Thanks! If ya need to, you can follow up with an email.

Don't Wait! Spray your boots otherwise your feets may become wet. And you don't want that. Even with wool socks, if your shoes let in the moisture/water, know what you'll have? Wet feet!! And, likely cold, wet feet ...... just saying .........

I say we hit 100 Yes-RSVPs (even with No-shows). While in California, I was part of a few Meetup outings that reached 100 Yes-RSVPs (even with No-shows). Sue, OSL Organizer, is laughing her butt off and so am I too actually, cause we know this is fun and having this many RSVP Yes is one of the best things about Meetup (even with no-shows)!

Saturday looks to be another gorgeous Fall weekend day. It is going to be a little colder, like last year, so brace yourself! I recommend a good shell with a long sleeve shirt underneath as your first layer. Perhaps even consider a shell with a thin liner. For this outing, I also recommend hiking boots that reach over the ankle since we'll be on some rolling terrain. You may be happy in sneakers, but I don't seem them as the best choice. Hat, gloves optional --

Hi everyone, Please be sure to introduce yourself to me Saturday. And, of course, if you have a +1, please introduce them to me as well! At least one of you has a +2, and that is pretty awesome. Looking forward to meeting everyone! Of course, please, update your RSVP if your plans have changed. I have met 41 of you and I don't want to look for 'no-shows.' Thanks!

Second, a good place to pick up and try some examples of headlamps is Midwest Mountaineering. Well, as my luck would have it, Midwest Mountaineering is having their Annual Customer Appreciation Party this week. Go Shopping & try some new outdoor toys!! Here's their webpage for more information

    http://www.midwestmtn.com/current-events/events-calendar#CustomerAppreciationParty2013

I will Post more information on on headlamps, and feel free to post your comments here also. Please don't let this make you nervous. The hike, and the members who have attended the hike each year thoroughly enjoy, even without a lamp. Just think it's a great way to meet someone new :)
