Holiday Spirit Hike ..... Or Snowshoe (fingers-crossed)

We are meeting at the Sunset lake parking area Trailhead.

Please check directions/location ahead of time.

Come with your Lights On and Bells O'Ringing !!

This is a special time of year when we want to think of Family, Friends, and Neighbors. in doing so, we also want to think about those perhaps a little less fortunate than the rest of us. Come on out and celebrate with me & other OSLers as well as with Susan and Twin City Hikers by bringing a donation to give to someone who may be in need of something still worth having, gently used.

*** As always you DO NOT have to RSVP NO. ***

I always have a couple of bags of donations. It's just nice to continue to slim down on belongings by giving away items that someone else can benefit from, including: linens; bathroom towels, shoes; jackets; clothing – you name it, I’ve got something from almost every donatable group!

Please join us, Susan and I, by bringing a neatly packed bag of items to donate to From Me to You. This is a great organization that helps people prepare to return to the workforce. Because the clients are often just rebuilding their lives, they are in much need. Items could include: linens; bathroom towels, shoes; jackets; clothing, books, housewares, children's items etc.

Hiking Details: This may be a snowshoe event! We're going to start at the Multi-use trailhead and get a loop of the lower half of the park completed. Depending on how well we're doing I have an upper loop we can add on to this route as well. We'll visit the area of the park that has some hills, prairie, and lake views. The hike will go on for just around 3 hours, and this joint hike will be for both upbeat hoofers, as well as for those who want to stop to enjoy a photo-opportunity.

DIRECTIONS:

I35 South to CR42 West. Go 2 miles to Hanrehan Lake Blvd. Drive South to Murphy Lake Road. Continue South and turn left onto Sunset Lake road. Meet at Parking area off Sunset Lake road. This parking area is the Trailhead for the multi-use area.

GPS: 44.42'29.06, Lat 93.19'45.50 Lng

The hike went very well. It was a bit warmer than we all had planned on so it turned out to be a hike instead of snowshoeing. It was a little bit slippery out but everyone stayed on their feet. The trails were marked and Dave lead the way. I look forward to joining this group again.

Conditions for our snowshoe/hike are still looking good tomorrow. Park officials confirm there is still plenty of snow on the trails. However, if you do not plan to bring snowshoes, I do recommend Yaktrax or some similar type of slip-on cleat for traction. These are sold at Gander, MidWest, Cabela's, etc. You still have time tonight or tomorrow morning to get a pair!

Last year, I hosted a similar event at Elm Creek, and everyone had a great time. Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. Please try to leave early so you have plenty of time to arrive and start with everyone!

There is no reason to be scared. the roads are wet and temps are safely above freezing. Snow is expected to fall later in the afternoon, likely after 3pm. Remember, PARK SPEED LIMIT IS 10MPH. DRIVE SLOWLY. Everyone will be fine!

Please everyone consider carpooling - it will reduce the number of cars and make it easier for all to Meetup together. I am driving from West Metro. Anyone interested?

Also, No need to RSVP on both OSL and TCHM sites. I am going to remove duplicate RSVP. Thank you!

We are now (as I type actually) getting that much closer to having our first Snowshoe Outing of the 2012 season. I'd say we'll be near bouts halfway there by the end of the day!! Let's hope for steady temps & some more white stuff. Please keep an eye out for Updates & start preping yourself & equipment for the Holiday Spirit Snowshoe (or Hike) Meetup I am hosting next week. Thank You, AND BRING A FRIEND .........

That's correct. REI, Midwest, and Hoigaard's all offer classes this time of year for outdoor sports equipment, clothing, and to promote their selection. I'm glad you shared Chris! And, I hope to Post a classroom type event though I enjoy learning by doing these days. Talk soon.

Hey, Dave! Your welcome! I noticed there was a ton of winter outdoor classes as well. The other one that caught my eye was on snowboarding.

Hi! Does anyone have some recommendations on snowshoes, ie brand, location(s), cost, helpful tips, etc? I'm looking for my first set this year in case we actually do get some white stuff.

You might want to attend the Snowshoe Basics Meetup on Thursday - 11/29. You'll see a variety of snowshoes and learn a little something on how to snowshoe as well.
