Morning Hike on Pike Isle

This is quite a fun hike and I anticipate we'll be done within 2-1/2 hrs. This is a completely flat hike.

*** As always you DO NOT have to RSVP NO ***

Doggies Welcome. Don't think any will fall in the water either. ;)) However, like any other public venue, expect to keep your pups on-leash for most of this event. I crossed paths with a mix a people at this state park.

The parking area is about 2 miles from the Park Office/Visitor Center. Head toward the boat-launch. Look for Shelter B / Pavillion.

For those GPS-type people, here are coordinates to locate the parking area:

Lat[masked] (44°53'3.8580"), Lng[masked] (-93°10'[masked]")

DIRECTIONS:

Fort Snelling State Park entrance is located East of Post Road off State Hwy 5.

>>> We are NOT meeting at the Fort. <<<</p>

From the South:

Post Road is two exits from the Mall of America (one exit from I494/Hwy5 interchange).

From the North:

You can take Crosstown/Hwy 62 (East) or Hwy 55 (SouthEast)

OR

W 7th Street which turns into Hwy 5 heading South

The icing on the cake would have been seeing Reade trying to outrun our Moose Country server. Maybe this could be the theme of a future event. :-D

It was a thoroughly delightful hike. Sun, wind, and lots of wildlife! Oh, and deer, too! Hope to see y´all real soon! Patty

Hike was great, we did 3 hours and 7.8 miles, I think it took 2 hours to get across the little bridge!...lol. It was cold, but Tracey kept us out of the wind for most of it. Highlights were the deer, the mystery bird print and finding Susan 104's glove (don't understand why, if the glove was so warm, she took it off).

Great hike and a wonderful group of people! Thanks, Tracey, and thanks for scouting out, Dave. What fun standing in the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. Yes, the bucks and the does and the creepy, dirty snowman . . . what was that about?!

So much to say about this hike - Tracey was an incredible host. Reade and the ice brought me back to my childhood. We are just thankful he didn't break through the ice on the river too. I never saw so many deer in my life...deer, doe and bucks...everywhere. A bloody skull. Still don't know what animal that came from. Then there was the strange bird footprint - John (Bronx Boy), thought it might have been a Mn dinosaur. I'm wondering if it came from the flock of wild turkeys. Thanks Tracey - it was a great way to spend part of the day!

Thanks to all of you who came out this morning! You are why I organize, even when I couldn't attend!

Tracey was such a good host, everyone kept calling her Dave. Tracey did a marvelous job of keeping the wind at our backs at all times.

Hey Everyone, Please do your best to arrive on-time OR Early tomorrow. Here is a URL to look up Fort Snelling State Park:
    http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/fort_snelling/maps.html

We are meeting at Shelter B, and the Summer map clearly shows where it is located. For you interested in the trail route, look at the Winter Map. Please find a minute to check these maps before you head out!

My +1 guest can't come now. I wasn't able to change it without changing myself to a no. Dave or Tracy can you? Thanks.

Hi everyone, I have made Tracey an Event Organizer for this hike. Tracey has come out to a good number of my events and is a positive, uplifting member of the Meetup community in general. She is "Not From Here" so maybe that's why I like her so much to help me -- Just Kidding! Please welcome Tracey as a new Event Organizer when you see her Saturday, and do whatever you can to help us make this a successful outing for everyone! Cheers.

Katie, others, I'll be at Shelter B tomorrow @ 10:15 w Rusty. I drive a white Chev Tahoe. It'll be fun to have the pups run together. They are close in age. Leah, you're welcome to join if you want. We've met, and there's been no changes to the way I organize my Meetup events.

The walk today was fabulous - sun, good enough temps, walkable trails, good company. Based on the quality of this "preview", the walk on 1/12 will be great! Passed a deer parade........

Michelle, John, Mary - Thanks for joining me this morning. It was a treat being out with the sun shining for a brisk Winter hike. Love this little route, and it was fun being with the 3 of you as well as your pups!

Dave: thanks for a great experience this morning. The weather was ideal and I liked the nearly 7 miles of hiking in flat river bed terrain. My dog is snoring in her bed, utterly exhausted. Kudos to John for being an interesting conversant and I look forward to meeting Mary Anne and her darling companion Samantha again on a future walk about (as well as you and Mr. Rusty). Cheers to coordinating this event!

    Hi Dave,

If I recall correctly, Shelter B / Pavilion lot is NOT the same as the lot near the visitor's center. ;-)

That's correct Joe. Shelter B is near Boat Ramp after a right turn. Gift Shop is opposite direction, ie left turn. The start point I have chosen not only adds some distance but also adds a really enjoyable portion along the water ..... as you likely recall Joe, Thanks!

FYI - 1/12 is REI's Winter Trails Day event at Ft Snelling. Expect crowds, but also a lot of other outdoor things to do if you hang around 11-4
