Join us in Newport RI as we hike the beautiful Sachuest Point
After the hike we go for dinner, drinks, and nightlife in Downtown Newport.
This event will be held rain or shine. In the event of lightning or pouring rain we will just go to a local restaurant/bar for a social.
Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge
Occupying a peninsula between the Sakonnet River and Rhode Island sound, the 242 acre Sachuest Point National Wildlife refuge is a very popular site for the over 65,000 annual visitors each year.
The refuge sports a newly renovated visitor center, over 2.5 miles of nature trails, viewing platforms, and a number of Refuge volunteers present to help visitors and to help in management of the refuge.
From saltmarsh and beach strand habitats to upland shrub dominated lands, the refuge supports over 200 bird species.
This one has the added attraction of outstanding panoramic views of the Sakonnet River and the Atlantic Ocean. There are views of nearby Newport, Middletown and Little Compton. There are numerous deer and other wildlife throughout the refuge.
Getting There . . .
The refuge is located in Middletown, Rhode Island. Take route 1 South to route 138 East, over the Newport Bridge. Take the Newport exit and pass through downtown Newport on route 138A. Once through the downtown, you will pass First (or Newport) beach. Just past First beach, take a right onto Purgatory Road. Take a right onto Sachuest Point Drive and follow to the end, which will bring you directly into the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge parking lot.
After the hike we will be at Wharf Pub in Downtown Newport.

The Landing: Nightlife
At 7:00 PM, we will walk to the end of Bowen Wharf to the Landing Restaurant.
The landing has an outdoor deck with ocean views. This is a great place to have a drink and chat and listen to music. They also have an outdoor patio with a live band. It is a fun atmosphere and a something to please everyone.

1:30 pm: The leaders will be at meeting place to introduce people. This is a great time to get to know everyone
1:45 pm: Meeting time. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before hand because we want to get started on time. This is a great time to get to know everyone.
2:00 pm: We start hike
5: 00 pm: Dinner/Drinks at Wharf Pub

Dogs: No dogs allowed this is a national wildlife refuge.
• RSVP RESPONSIBLY! There are a few people in the habit of no-showing and it hurts these events! Don't be that person! Only RSVP if you can go and update your RSVP (don't wait until the day of the event) if you can't make it. Your fellow group members and organizers are counting on you to show up. :) We will be tracking RSVP's:)
• Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
Dressing in layers works best. Wear appropriate footwear for hiking.
• Please bring water, snacks and any personal medicines and gear you may need as well. These outings are free but you are responsible to have everything you need.
