kool 50's cafe

Meet at 3pm at the SouthEast corner of Roof Garden Cafe & Bar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Look for red lettered sign saying "KOOL". (Photo shows SW corner)

In case of rain only: please purchase your entrance fee first, and then come to the benches near the Membership table at the ground floor main entrance. At 3:30 we will go to the Petrie Court Bar.

If you arrive after 3:30 AND it's raining, you might find us at the Petrie Court Bar (ground floor -- back of museum looking out to Cleopatra's Needle in Central Park). But if the weather is good, we'll be at the Roof Garden Cafe & Bar.

i went there and I could not find anybody at the Rooftop Bar. No sign. Nothing. I hung out for awhile enjoying the view and the sun and then left on my own to explore the museum. True, I got there a little later, but there was no one there socializing except a bunch of tourists. Even checked out the other dining and bar venues in the museum and saw no one.

It's a shame because it's a stunningly gorgeous day for a martini and good conversation on a rooftop garden but - I have some more urgent priorities that are taking more of my weekend than I expected so I won't be there after all. Everyone - have fun! Be witty, insightful, flirtatious and lots of other good things - but do remember to be kind. Cheers!

One more thought - I think I may have a sticky name tag thing hanging around here somewhere, so I may write KOOL on one and wear it as I'm visiting a few areas of the museum during the day. Look for me and feel free to say hello and possibly we'll be interested in the same areas.

(continuation) We can't stay there and socialize, so we do want to move to another bar location. So we wait from 3 to 3:30 to be sure we have everyone gathered and then move together to the indoor bar location, the Petrie bar. (my personal thought is it would have been easier to just go to the 2nd choice bar if 1st choice is raining - but majority rules, and the benches won). The 3:30 cutoff is so that we can actually get to the good part of relaxing and socializing.

I've seen some questions and confusion expressed. So another recap:

Meet at 3:00, on the roof, SE corner. If it is not raining there are no twists to the plan - that's all there is to it.

If it's raining then it will obvious we are NOT meeting on the roof - because it's raining and that's no fun and kind of dumb. In that case we gather at the benches by the membership desk? Why? Because enough people wanted to do that. But we can't stay there and drink and socialize (continued)

If you arrive after 3:30;and ONLY if it is raining:::::: the Petrie Bar is on the ground floor with views of central park. Simply ask one of the security guards when you come in...remember .....only if it's raining and after 3:30.

Roof Bar sounds good. What & where is the Petrie Bar? 3rd choice benches in lobby if it rains on both bars-? Whoohoo! Ruth. Go girl. I also like the name "KOOL 50's+" Could the original organizer say something? Anything? Hello!?

    July 19, 2012

  • Eileen

I agree with the plans to meet on the rooftop bar or inside downstairs entrance if rain.
Also, I think the organizer should change the name of the group, I like "KOOL 50's +" what
    do you think?

To recap my idea: 3pm at the SE corner of Rooftop bar. I'll go along with the benches backup plan, but then what??? My rain date plan was to meet at 3pm at the (SE corner) of Petrie Bar rather than the benches entrance so we can mingle and culturalize ourselves at the same time. I have made a sign with red lettering!!! Whoohoo!! I will bring two signs to pass on to another member, just in case!!! We have 2 days to sort it out. Ruth

Does this group have an organizer, or are we self-organizing? (If there's no longer an organizer, that might explain the mysterious "Changing name to closing" group name ...)

I think it's a great idea. I'll look for the KOOL sign at 3. Does anyone know if the organizer will be there on Sunday?

I like Ruth's suggestion - it sounds like the best plan to accomplish our purpose for this trip and maximize our enjoyment and socializing. To paraphrase and recap Ruth's suggestion:
    - (we arrive at the museum earlier in the day, see what we want to see on our own)
    - Meet at the Rooftop Bar at 3:00, meet, socialize, see the Clouds installation
    - At 5:30 when they close and kick us out, say farewell to our new friends or move the party elsewhere (TBD)

As a follow up, my vote is for the Rooftop bar, and we could congregate at the most southeastern corner, rather than the ground floor entrance. This way, we can enjoy the museum while waiting for whoever actually shows up, and no-one misses anything. http://www.glenwoodnyc.com/manhattan-living/tomas-saraceno-met-roof-garden. I can bring a 8x10 card with KOOL in large letters for you to recognize the group. If it's pouring with rain, we can do Petrie as a backup plan.

The rooftop martini bar and cafe (with magnificent views of Central Park and environs) which features the Tomas Sarcano sculpture/installation would combine the social and cultural interactive elements I think we are looking for www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2012/tomas-saraceno. 2nd suggestion (if A/C or indoors is desirable) Petrie Court wine bar - surrounded by European sculpture: www.metmuseum.org/visit/plan-your-visit/dining-at-the-museum/petrie-court-cafe-and-wine-bar.

The Met is gigantic; we can''t see all of it even if we marathoned all day. Why not go to the website and choose a few exhibitions we'd like to visit? We can then set up a poll on the Meetup site and have some idea of what we want to see - in groups of 10 or so. Whaddya think?

how are 41 people going to move around the museum togethe? should some of us start at the new Islamic exhibit and some of us start somewhere else and then join up at the cafe for a late refreshment? Should we cap the size of the group?

we could meet across from the membership desk on the ground level entrance - just south/downtown - to the left of the main entrance. it sees fewer people. But whatever the group wants. Will someone be holding up a sign?

how about meeting in front of information desk, at entrance.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
