Only God Forgives

Nicholas Winding Refn is currently one of the most acclaimed directors around at present. His last film, Drive, was widely regarded as the best film of 2011. In this Ryan Gosling again stars as a mid level criminal in seedy downtown Bangkok. When his brother is killed by a rival organisation he must hunt down those responsible.

Empire Magazine have given the film five stars and say the following: Though it takes the trappings of a Gangster film this is the psychedelic study of a criminal trapped in hell bent on picking a fight with his creator. Experimental and uncompromising, Gosling and Winding Refn's film is a tripped out rift on the crime family movie.

As this is an early showing (4pm start - worth buying a ticket in advance as the Phoenix can sell out) there will be time for a drink or meal afterwards to discuss the film.

The film was very slow, very dark, bizarre, illogical and pretty unpleasant to watch. However as a piece of cinema it was interesting to see and interesting to talk about afterwards. The general consensus afterwards is that the next film should be a light hearted comedy!

Time changed to 3:30pm to allow for a drink pre film in the Phoenix bar (turn right and go upstairs from the foyer if you've not been before. In the event the bar is closed just wait outside and we'll see if there is an alternative venue once everyone has arrived.

Hi. I am a new member and am hoping to come along to a film soon and be more actively involved. I am in two minds about this film, though. I liked Gosling in Drive (also Winding Refn) and (like Julie) in Place Beyond the Pines, but I heard a review of Only God Forgives on Front Row the other day which made me have my doubts. The reviewer (forgotten her name ..) slated it and John Wilson said he considered the violence to be bordering on pornographic (although the reviewer didn't much care about the violence). I guess the only real way I find out about the film is to see it, isn't it ...?

To go back to my previous comment about reviews - Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian gives it 5 stars and says it 'deserves to be seen'. Interestingly, his view of the violence is 'though sometimes almost unwatchable, is effectively questioned far more than in many another straight action film'. Had I not said yes already, I would confirm my attendance now!

Can I just clarify what time we are meeting? Will you be outside just before film starts Brian? Cheers, Kersty

I usually have a little look at reviews, possibly out of nosiness. However I have always refused to be swayed by them and choose to get either disappointed or delighted by my own steam. We all individually get something different from a film. I'm going to give this one a whirl and see what occurs.

I can't make it this Saturday either, sorry! But thanks Brian for putting up a film, and for what its worth, the last Ryan Gosling film I saw, "The Place Beyond the Pines" was terrific, and his performance really excellent - never was before but am a big fan of his now.
