Several members of the Arts Group are going to The Manor House sports and craft hotel in Devon for a few days this December, and the more who join us, the merrier. I've stayed there several times and it's a wonderful place, with fabulous sports facilities and a well-equipped craft centre, offering 17 different activities - everything from enamelling to jewellery-making. It's also situated in lovely countryside on the edge of Dartmoor, near Yes Tor, which makes it ideal for walking or riding.
There are two major advantages to going at this time of year:
1) The price: Approx £190 for 4 nights full-board, all activities included.
2) The fact that the facilities, which include swimming pools, saunas, indoor tennis, squash and badminton courts, bowling greens, and more, are severely underused, which means you never have to queue.
Perhaps as importantly, it's a friendly, relaxed sort of place, where people strike up acquaintances easily, and are happy to team up for sports, games, quizzes, or to just leave you alone, if you want some privacy!
Single room accommodation is fairly limited and unfortunately, all single rooms for mid-December are taken. However, I've provisionally booked 5 'family suites', consisting of 2 separate bedrooms, a corridor and a shared bathroom - fairly similar to student accommodation in fact, and offering a suitable level of privacy. This is from Monday 16th December. So far we've filled only 2 of the 10 places, so there are eight more available.
Family suites have to be booked for a minimum of four nights, but if you'd prefer a shorter stay, there are plenty of double/twin rooms available as well, (some actually have three beds) This would obviously mean sharing a bedroom as well as the bathroom, but they are cheaper, at around £160 for three nights.
Other facilities at the Hotel include health and beauty treatments (including a range of massages from Reiki to sports massage), free swimming and tennis tuition, supervised archery, pistol and rifle shooting competitions (with instruction for beginners), guided walks on the moors, a gym room, curling, ten pin bowling and snooker tables.
I need to let the hotel know by December 12th whether or not we're going ahead with the booking, so I would appreciate firm commitments by next Sunday (8th September) at the latest to allow for postal confirmation.
