Oxford Arts Group presents 'What Is JAZZ'? with Alan Barnes and Alyn Shipton

Oxford Arts Group and The Albion Beatnik present 'WHAT IS JAZZ'? a humorous talk by saxophonist Alan Barnes with bassist Alyn Shipton, illustrated by musical example, film AND concert.

Saxophonist ALAN BARNES picks up jazz awards with tedious regularity and is probably the most popular performer on the jazz club circuit, known for his verbal wit as well as his post-bop hard swinging style.

ALYN SHIPTON is a broadcaster on Radio 3 (Jazz Record Requests and other shows), a leading biographer, The Times jazz correspondent and a jazz bassist.

This is a special show created for Oxford Arts Group by the original long-haired luddite from Littlemore, DENNIS HARRISON.

Tea, wine, cake, crumpet and other recreational substances available.

    Hi,

There is anyone coming from Headington willing to carpool? That would be great!

I just came in Oxford and so far had an horrible experience with public transport.

    Thanks anyway!

I think carpooling among the groups is a logical next step. Let's think about how we might do this, particularly for larger events :)

Alan and Alan were both amusing and informative in tracing the history of jazz, and showed their virtuosity via a number of musical interludes covering everything from swing and be-bop, to the free-form expressionism of John Coltrane. A more prolonged musical interaction would have been welcome, but overall a pleasant evening.

Yes the saxophonist had a lot of air in his lungs.

Very useful for me, that I wish to swim in that sea (jazz) and I have no real clue yet. Anyway, where do we meet? Any sign, any phone number? Thanks.

Hi Roberto. Everyone's going straight to the Albion Beatnik bookstore as far as I know. It's at 34 Walton Street, OX2 6AU Oxford

I may have to leave early, but a little jazz is better than none at all.

The live jazz is during the first half of the event Joel, so your jazz craving should be satisfied...

Thanks, Neil, but I'm going to have to miss the whole thing - got to fill in for someone who's ill. Looking forward to more events.

Would it matter if I didn't get there until about 6.30pm?

    January 8, 2014

    • Neil

Hi Debrah, the talk and concert last 75 minutes, followed by a break and then a film, so you'd miss all or most of the first part - up to you of course, but not sure it's really worth your while?

Aw, this is what comes of having a daughter who wants to be a ballerina - too much chauffeuring to dance things. Maybe she'll keep me in the style I'd like to become accustomed to as a thank you when she's famous ! I'll bow out this time, but will look forward to the next OAG event.
