Jim B Donovan's Arthouse Disco Episode III: The Indie-Glam Parade

'This ain't rock and roll....this is GENRECIDE'.

Rather like the 'Blue' and 'Green' factions in the classic 'Tomorrow People' series of the 1970s, our membership currently finds itself locked in combat between the Glam Rock brigade and the self-styled 'indie kids' of the 80s, so in an attempt to avoid panic at the disco, episode 3 of The Arthouse Disco has been diplomatically entitled 'The Indie-Glam Parade'.

There will be T-Rex, The Cocteau Twins, David Bowie, New Order, Alice Cooper, The Happy Mondays, Suzi Quatro, Belle and Sebastian, The Sweet, Pulp, Roxy Music, The Smiths, Echobelly, The New York Dolls, Talking Heads and Mott The Hoople, as well all the obscure requests the DJ won't have heard of.

What can be guaranteed is thumping beats, a sense of fun (in a post-ironic miserablist way)) and the opportunity to dance as freakishly as you like with nobody daring to point the finger lest their own musical proclivities be exposed.

We're back at St Margaret's Institute for the night, which also means hot food on the menu (and plenty of cold drinks, naturally!) It's also being held on a Friday night, but we're just too hipster to thank anyone or anything for that.

Get your platform boots on, grab your baggies and anoraks, or simply stand and sneer at the notion of ever doing anything so crassly commercial. As long as you're a space cadet of whatever vintage, there's room for you on the dance floor.

Time: 7-11

Cost: £7/£5

DJ: Jim B Donovan

Videos: 'If six were nine'

A pair of sunglasses were left behind on Friday, I found them while we were tidying up and brought them home with me. Please let me know if you are missing a pair and I will arrange to get them back to you

Well, it turned out to be a case of, if not actual panic, then 'mild consternation', at the disco last night, when things took an unexpected turn on the turntables. It would be a shame if we shielded our gaze entirely from the unfamilar lest we be turned to stone, but I do hear the comments being made. Overall, a fabulous evening with Jim B Donovan, playing his familiar key role in keeping the dancefloor moving. I have to say how bloody lucky we are to have such a fantastic DJ prepared to provide the musical backdrop for a night like this which doesn't exist ANYWHERE else in Oxford, and probably for hundreds of miles around. Also invaluable is the help offered by group members, which helps to keep costs down. We have a lovely DJ with a vast array of vinyl, video backdrops, food and drink and a fab little venue. Let's support these evenings. And that includes TURNING UP if you RSVP! Food and drink is bought based on numbers signing up and it would be nice if they tallied occasionally!

Hi 'which also means hot food on the menu (and plenty of cold drinks, naturally!)' - does this mean it's included in the cover price or is it extra?

    July 24, 2014

    • Neil

Food (slices of pizza/quiche) included in the price, but drinks (sadly) not! (Will try and get some salad together as well, unless anyone wants to volunteer??

    Well hotdiggittidog!!

Thanx 4 that clip. I'd not heard of the series. There's a fair amount of intertextuality slushing about here. 'Jaunting' surely references Alfred Bester's 'Tiger Tiger' (aka 'The Stars My Destination'), seminal cyberpunk SF novel, regularly cited as one of the best. The head of PsiCorps in 'Babylon 5' (may be thought as like 'Star Trek', but is not, being morally serious.) is called 'Bester' and there is an ep where the Drazi (one of the secondary alien species) have their traditional civil war between the Green and Purple Factions. A major part of the backstory in B5 is the Vorlon's manipulation of humanity to produce telepaths, empaths and psychokineticists.
