UCSD Stuart Collection of Sculptures

Join us for a morning walk and photo shoot at UCSD.

The Stuart Collection consists of 18 internationally renowned sculptures around the UC San Diego campus. Most of them are outside and publicly available. Join us as we walk the campus and tour as many of these artworks as possible. We will get an early start while the sun still provides us with the beautiful morning light.

We have photographed many of these sculptures on previous meetups to the campus, but this meetup will specifically target the artworks. If you are interested in previewing information about the Stuart Collection, there is a webpage online at:

Stuart Collection

There is also a free downloadable iPhone app with videos about each artwork in the collection. It is available at:

Stuart Collection App

We will meet at the parking lot at the Medical Center at the corner of Gilman Drive and Russell Drive at 7:45AM and begin our walk at 8:00AM sharp. You can park in any metered space, or any space marked “A” or “B”. Do not park in any restricted spaces.

We should be finished with our shoot around 11:30. Those who want to can have lunch at a nearby Vietnamese Restaurant, Pho La Jolla which is less than five minutes away by car. The address and phone number is 3211 Holiday Ct. La Jolla, CA[masked]) 587-4688.

Here is their web site: Pho La Jolla

To add something unique to this shoot, each member is encouraged to upload one photo of each sculpture. Let us see how we photograph the sculptures.

Each member will receive a map / brochure showing the location of each sculpture with a brief description.

What to bring: Walking shoes, the route is about 3 ½ miles long. As for lenses, several types will work, wide angle, prime and long zooms. Medium zooms such as 24-70mm are probably best or lenses such as[masked]mm,[masked]mm, etc.

For those of you joining us for lunch at Pho La Jolla, here are the directions to the Restaurant which is 1/2 mile away.
Turn right out of the parking lot and take the first right turn on to Villa La Jolla Drive.
Go 1/2 mile and turn left on Holiday Court.
Turn right into first driveway. The Restaurant is located at the back of the building.

We will do a second shoot on another day if there is enough interest. I want to evaluate this shoot before first, before scheduling a second one.

    March 4, 2013

  • Drema S.

David, at 10 AM on that day, I will still be leading the 1st group. Another day is a possibility if there are enough people on the waiting list, but it will probably also be pretty early in order to catch the best light. However, if there are lot's of people who would like to shoot later, then I will consider it.
