San Diego Botanic Garden with a twist

This time we'll start with a walk to the Garden's southern section, outside the Ecke Building to explore the underwater and California Native Garden. It evokes a sub-marine landscape.

SDBG provides free entry first Tuesday of each month (regularly $12); you only have to pay $2 for parking. This 37 acre garden has something for everyone, all year round: succulent gardens, bamboo gardens with a lily pond (and some critters), waterfalls, fruit orchards, CA native plants and more.

New members in particular, will enjoy working on their macro shooting skills.

Let's meet at the Plant & Gift Shop promptly at 9:15am at the Plant & Gift Shop behind the Admissions Booth. The gates are open by 9am. Here is a map: GARDEN MAP.

Afterward, we can take time to have lunch at St. Tropez, a restaurant in the Lumberyard in downtown Encinitas. Address: 947 S Coast Highway (behind Starbucks). These lunches are now a PPS tradition and it's nice to sit together for camera talk and to get to know one another better. Please familiarize yourself with the location of the Cafe before the shoot. Here's the link: ST. TROPEZ and here is a map: St Tropez location

Directions: Take Encinitas Blvd exit 42 off Hwy 5 in Encinitas, go inland/east (.5 miles) to Quail Gardens Rd, turn left at signal, the entrance is .3 mile on your left.

If you need to reach us: Karen Wilson-Bonnar 925 998-32011; Maxine Hesse [masked].

Awesome meetup! Lots of photo subjects, including a Green Heron and the blooming Saffire Tower plants that Maxine showed us. Maxine also gave a fine tour of the less-often visited "underwater" area. Thanks!

Fun time. I enjoyed Maxine's suggestion of changing where we start. Good group, the weather quickly got sunny and hot! An other great PPS shoot!

I would attend if I could. For those shooting at the Garden today, this is perfect macro weather.

I'm sitting in the McD in Encinitas, and the weather looks good to me. There is scaterd, very light rain, but I can see sun coming thru the clouds west of here. Sorry so many have changed their status. Miss you!

Hello there! I live in Bonita and its a good drive & gas for me to play it by ear if its raining my way but not in Encinitas. I would not know that and I very much would like to participate as it is I rarely have the opportunity to attend the Botanical meetup due to my work schedule. Couldn't one of the Event Organizers send everyone an email that are on the RSVP list email by 6a. if the meetup is a Yes or No? This way I know if I should go to work instead of lose a vacation day? Thank you for your consideration.

It would appear from the weather forecast, that the chance of rain at 11am will be less than 9am. If we delay the start 2 hours we might be able to get in some shooting. I'm planning on going to the McD's on Rancho Real (Best Buy Shopping Center) and if it's raining at 8:30 I'll just drink an other cup of Senior coffee until 10:30 to see if it clears. The rain may make for some unique photo opportunities. Is the glass half full or half empty? :>)

Great idea, David. I need to be back in Ocean Beach by noon so I'm not wanting to shift the time of the meet up for myself and everyone else. That being said, it is free Tuesday. Each of us can go at any time that day.

Hope you are talking about your glass (lens) full of images not full of water.

I think we can all play it by ear. Maxine lives close by and will show up to lead the group. If it is raining or looks like imminent rain at 8am in Ocean Beach, I won't go. I assume everyone else will do the same.

National Weather Service forcast for Encinitas is showers till 1:00 P.M. If it raining I also will stay home. I'll check the forcast in the morning.

I'm worried about getting my equipment wet as well. The forecast isn't promising so if it's raining I'll stay home, if not I'll head out and hope for the best.

    • Karen Wilson-Bonnar

Thank you Cindhi. I am working on getting a hold of Maxine to see what she thinks about the weather forecast. It has a 70% chance of rain but is predicted to be in the afternoon. The weather conditions could be fabulous for a shoot tomorrow if we don't get rained on. We'll try to let everyone know, ASAP.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to make this one. I was on the waiting list and forgot 'till I was confirmed!
