Improptu Night Shoot Downtown

When: Sunday, December 29 at 4:00pm sharp.

Where: We will meet in front of the Star of India at the Maritime Museum of San Diego

What to expect: A great opportunity to learn about night photography and to get some beautiful images at the many choice locations along the Waterfront. We will begin by giving some basic instructions and tips for those of you who have never attempted to shoot at night and for those who want to learn more.

We will meet at the Star of India at 4:00pm and move out shortly after. Be on time. We will not wait for latecomers. We will take photos around sunset which is at 4:50p.m. (Civil Twilight is at 5:17p.m. and Nautical Twilight is at 5:48p.m.) and into the evening at different locations along the waterfront, the USS Midway, the G Street Pier, Seaport Village etc. I will move the group around fairly quickly in order to get the best shots at multiple locations. Best time for photography will be about 15-30 minutes after sunset.

At this time I expect we will shoot until about 6:30pm.  We may try do some light painting, so bring a flash light.

What to bring: A tripod is a must and a cable release or remote are highly recommended. Bring your wide and fast lenses. Bring a flashlight.

Parking: There is metered parking near the Star of India and across the street. Some of it may be payable on Sunday's. Make sure you read the instructions on the parking meters and / or parking areas.

Some important announcements: Safety is first. Stay with the group. Do not wander off alone. Stay with at least one, or more members.

We are experiencing problems with members changing their RSVP's at the last moment. Please try not to do that in fairness for people on the waiting list.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact me Walter via email. If you are late or get lost my cell number is[masked]-7893. Only call if you really need to.

I'm looking forward to forward to seeing you all and a great evening out!

I ended up going by myself as by the time I got parked and started looking for the group ( I ran into one of them who told me you were on your way to a pier), I apparently either missed or bypassed the group. However, it was a good idea and I did some photography around the Midway, Seaport Village and just north of the Hilton. Lots of people out, making it necessary to really watch my step while carrying a tripod, etc. Nice idea!

Discovered new locations to shoot the downtown night lights. Pace for shooting was just right allowed me time to set up and experiment with different WB levels.

Hi Walter, I just twisted my knee getting my camera gear into the car to leave. I am going to have to cancel. If it feels better, I will catch up with you, but I'm worried about all the walking with it not in tip top shape.

Can anyone advise this ol' novice about what lens to use, please?
I have an 18 - 270 zoom lens that's f1:3.5, an 18 - 55, also f1:3.5 (both automatic lenses), and a borrowed 50mm f1:1.4 older, manual lens. Nice and fast, but not wide-angle and not automatic. Which would you advise I use for tonight's sunset photos? Thanks! Charlyne

OK, I moved the three members who were on the waiting list to the GO list. --- Be sure to give yourself ample time to find parking, as it may be tight. --- If you miss us and arrive late walk south toward the USS Midway and the G Street Pier (near the Fish Market Restaurant)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
