PPS is excited to offer to its members a second private tour of the Gemological Institute of America. Our tour guide will be Maxine Hesse, a co-organizer of PPS and yes, a docent at GIA. Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the preeminent source of gemological knowledge in the U.S. and is respected internationally for its research, education and gem testing, having 13 campuses around the world.  Founded in 1931, it has been at its Carlsbad location, overlooking the ocean, since 1997.

This is a unique opportunity and a unique shoot. You will be able to see many gemstones, jewelry pieces and raw gem material. Most items will be in glass cases so flashes are not recommended. Bring your fast lenses and prepare to be challenged. Monopods may be helpful, but we cannot accommodate tripods due to space considerations.

There is so much more to shoot and to enjoy at GIA than just the gorgeous jewelry. The building has beautiful architectural lines and fun reflective surfaces to practice your architectural shooting abilities. Outside the lobby is a beautiful view of the ocean, and with the right weather, can offer wonderful landscape shots. Several areas along our tour have unbelievable photographs. Some depict the story behind the gems, and some are microscopic views of the gems. It is a virtual photo show.

It is REQUIRED by the GIA that we give them the full names of all attendees in advance of our shoot. The sign up for this event will close two days prior to the shoot. Please be considerate of fellow members if you are confirmed for the shoot and determine that you will be unable to make it, please change your RSVP in plenty of time to allow for others.

All attendees will have to provide their first and last name prior to the shoot. Picture Identification will need to be presented to the guard before you are allowed entry to the campus. The guard will give you a parking pass. Please remember that if you car pool, all parties within the car must have a picture ID and be on the pre-submitted list. Once inside the building, you are also required to check in at the front desk to receive a pass to wear around your neck whilst you are on the premises.

If you would like more information with regards to GIA & its location, please visit their website at: Gemological Institute of America

Special Notes regarding all PPS Photo Shoots:

Please only RSVP YES if you are sure you are going. Please avoid changing your RSVP just before an event as this deprives other members the opportunity to attend .

Please Note: By submitting a YES RSVP and participating in any PPS event, you agree that PPS, Organizers, and Event Hosts are NOT responsible for your safety or for any injury or damage to your person or your property, or that of your guest(s). You agree that you have read the instructions of the announcement and that you and your guest(s) are voluntarily assuming all risks of participating in the event.
If you RSVP yes, please show up! If you RSVP yes, and don’t show up, your name will be noted and you may be removed from the group if you are a repeat offender.

We ask that new members attending their first PPS event introduce themselves to the organizer(s) present when arriving, and to the group.

New members should familiarize themselves with PPS rules, etiquette and instructions for uploading etc. by going to the "Discussions" section of our site.

As a courtesy to the organizers and for potential group sponsors, we ask all members attending a shoot to rate the shoot and leave feedback. Please do this before uploading images to the event albums.

Have been wanting to go to this museum for a long time, so it was nice to get there. Tough place, of course, to photograph with all of the glass.

I'm sorry to miss this one! I was there last month for a field trip with my son's class and it was amazing. I wasn't able to shoot much though, with all the kids running around! Maybe next time....

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
