Please be sure to read this invitation in its entirety before submitting an RSVP. Please only RSVP to ONE of the four Butterfly exhibit photoshoots to give as many interested members as possible a chance to attend this shoot.
The ever popular Butterfly Jungle Shoot will be offered four times this year for 20 photographers each, on Saturday April 5, Sunday April 6, Wednesday April 9 and Saturday April 12. To ensure that a maximum number of photographers can attend, please only RSVP for one event.
It's time for the annual Butterfly exhibit and to enjoy the great outdoors at the San Diego Safari Park. Because of the size of the exhibit area the group size will be limited to 20 photographers.
We will meet at the entrance of the Safari Park at 7:15a.m. get in line at 7:30 a.m. and enter the Park at 8:00 a.m. sharp to be the first group in the exhibit. Please be punctual, if you are late we cannot guarantee that you will enter the exhibit with the PPS group.
We will make straight for the Butterfly Exhibit. We will have 45 minutes maximum to photograph the butterflies in the exhibit in order to be fair to the many who will be waiting outside.
We will meet again at the benches at the exit of the exhibit. Afterwards we'll take some time to explore the rest of the park, please note that the east side of the park is undergoing construction for the Tiger Exhibit.
Admission to the Park now costs $46.00 for non-members and is free for members. Parking is $8 per vehicle for members, $10 for non-members. Diamond members park free. Annual memberships for unlimited admission to the Park and the Zoo begins at $98. I suggest if you're going to attend more than one of our photo shoots at these venues that you buy a membership. There will be at least ten photo shoots at these venues this year.
As for lenses long macros 100mm+, medium zooms to 200mm or even long zooms to 400mm will work well. Remember you will be dealing with some low light, lots of fellow visitors and sometimes your minimum or maximum focusing distance will be limited. Monopods or handheld shooting at high ISO or with low power flash are required, DO NOT plan to use a tripod in the butterfly exhibit.
While we wait in line the organizers present can discuss camera settings with those that need help.
Don't forget to bring a hat, sunscreen and other San Diego outdoor gear. During our last photo shoots at the Park, we walked an average of about six to seven miles, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, you can email me on my member profile, Jim Stone. My cell number is [masked]. Only call if you have to.
Important announcements: If there are any members who have a pass and can get a non-member in for free, please indicate so in your RSVP, so that those needing a pass can contact you. Through the generosity of several members this has been very useful on numerous occasions.
