In the spirit of Jessica's email about the Raspberry Pi, I'll mention a couple of items.
http://www.themagpi.com/ is the web site for the free online magazine devoted the the Raspberry Pi.
The San Gabriel Valley Hardware Hackers Group meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Hastings branch library. This is on the northwest corner of Sierra Madre Villa and Orange Grove, less than a mile north of the Gold Line. I haven't been to any of the meetings because they are on the same night as the San Bernardino Microwave Society. By the way, some of those guys are experimenting with Raspberry Pis to use in amateur radio applications.) The website is sgvhak.org and they are a spinoff of the San Gabriel Valley Linux User Group (sgvlug.org) that meets at Caltech on the second Thursday of the month.

There is a free backup seminar at the Hilton Long Beach (next to the Long Beach Transit Mall on the Blue Line) on Thursday, January 17 put on by trutinit.com . I've been a couple of these in past years and they are really well done. He doesn't waste time and, after the sponsors leave, W. Curtis Preston tells you what he thinks of them, positive or negative.
