GHOST RIVER and CHICKASAW STATE PARK WEEKEND

  • Jun 6, 2014 · 3:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

PLEASE READ REFUND INSTRUCTIONS.

Paddle the Wolf River near historic LaGrange TN to Moscow TN. This water trail of the Wolf River encompasses the mystic Ghost Section, Spirit Lake, and an abundance of wildlife and beautiful trees.

Just about anytime is the best time to be on the Ghost River.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=gYD4yuh6EcE

The Ghost River section of the Wolf is an unchannelized river section that meanders through bottomland hardwood forests, cypress-tupelo swamps, and open marshes. Some of the most impressive trees that occur here are large oaks that include cherrybark, water, willow, and swamp chestnut. The low ridges above the river bottoms support tulip poplar, beech, and white oak with northern red oak infrequently occurring.

This trip will take over 6 hours to complete the 8.5 miles section from Yager Rd bridge in LaGrange to the Bateman St bridge near Moscow.

Trip details; Saturday plan to eat breakfast on your own, be loaded, and on the road by 7am to arrive at put-in by 8 am. I would like to load the gear on Friday night if possible. Pack a lunch for a stop at river marker #3. We must pack our gear on our friends' trucks so we can only bring a few shuttle trucks due to the limited parking. You may want to chip in for part of the gas on this 40 mile trip. We will drop off the kayaks and gear at LaGrange then take all the trucks and drivers to the take-out to drop off the trucks. We should be in the water no later than 9 am. We need to stay in a single line for paddle and not too close. Speak quietly for respect of others. Take lots of pictures. Bring a whistle in case you get lost from the pack. Enjoy what nature has to offer.

The Wolf River Conservancy is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the Wolf River corridor and watershed as a sustainable natural resource. Relying on a unique network of community leaders and a base of knowledge created through a 27-year history, WRC work to protect wilderness and to connect people to the outdoors. Read their story below,

Camping under the Stars at Chickasaw State Park next to Lake Placid, yeaaa. Chickasaw State Rustic Park is situated on some of the highest terrain in west Tennessee, with water on Lakes Placid which do plan on doing some leisure paddling this weekend. Chickasaw was one of Tennessee’s earliest state parks and has always been a place of classic state park recreation, nature, and scenery in an historic environment. It is still one of the most beautiful in the area with the horseback riding and miles of hiking trails.

Great paddle and camp out. Enjoyed being with friends already knew and making new friends. The weather was very very good to us.

I had so much fun on this trip. As a newbie to the sport I loved the technicality of this paddle. The water wasn't fast moving so it made it forgiving but had lots of twists and obstacles to keep me on my toes and improve my skills. This group is a fantastic, fun bunch of people. So blessed to have met all of you and can't wait to see you all agian.

As usual this weekend everyone was together as a friendly group giving a warm Paddle Adventure UnLTD welcome to the new Paddlers and pulling together through the storm to make this another enjoyable camping/kayak trip. The rain did not damper anyone's spirits but may of bonded them even closer. Oh what fun it was!!!
A big thank you to Bama, aka Mark Barchie for driving down from work to transport several kayaks for us.
A yummy special Thank you to Big Dave, aka Dave Andrews for driving from Nashville just to make that wonderful dinner on a crazy windy Saturday night... Thank You !!!
Last but not least~I wish to thank Water Lilly Deb's years of dedicated service to this group by giving to others before herself so that we all could have memories to cherish forever. ~ Gabe Pizzillo

Deb, I see several (4 or 5 at least) last minute cancellations. I would like to fill two spots (to be confirmed). At this late hour, I am assuming the canceling parties are not too interested in getting their money back. Will this be OK?

      Yes please do.

Hi paddlers! Just wanted to let you all know that Gabe and I are bringing pasta and salad for Saturday night to share. If any of you know what you are bringing, it might be nice to post so we don't have too much of the same things.
Looking forward to this! It's the BEST river paddle ever - especially this time of year. If you haven't been, you will be spellbound by the beauty of the river itself, the yellow water lilies, and of course the company! :)
    Safe travels!

I'm so disappointed that I won't be able to go this year. So a spot has opened up….

    June 4, 2014

  • Britney W.

Does anyone want to carpool to the site? The rack on my car holds two yaks, so one person could ride with me and help with gas. If you have TONS of gear probably not the best option. Although I'm a minimalist and my stuff won't even take up all of my back seat, so I would still have part of the back and trunk free. OR...I'm happy to ride with someone else and split gas with them. Just hate to have a ton of cars scrambling for space on the campsite.

    May 14, 2014

    • Big D.

Is your friend bringing a kayak or do you have room to carry just a second kayak? I am driving but only have one rack for my car. I only need help taking the kayak there and it will stay.

The firewood thing is true for Kentucky but in Tennessee most of the parks will allow any firewood that you bring within the state of Tennessee

    June 2, 2014

  • "Water Lily" D.

gathering of fire wood is allowed. 2-3 tents per campsite works well. 4 people max per site. We have 12 sites 4,5,6,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24. There are fire rings at each site. THERE IS NO electric at the sites but there is electricity at the bathhouse. Bringing firewood is a good idea.

    June 2, 2014

    • Britney W.

I would double check that you can bring outside firewood. I know several of the parks we camped at last year required you by wood locally to keep from introducing non-native species into the the park that might be hiding in the wood. We brought wood to one site and they told us we could either keep it locked inside the car or we needed to burn it completely asap. Needless to say we had a HUGE fire that night. :)

      June 2, 2014

  • "Water Lily" D.

Anyone want to carpool from Franklin? Leaving fri returning sun

    May 30, 2014

  • Tom D

I was looking at the Park Information and was not able to determine if they have Fire rings at the Tent Sites. They say that each campsite has grills and a table with bathroom/showers, water and power but nothing about fire rings or pits. Anyone know? I was going to bring firewood good or bad idea?

    June 1, 2014

  • Tom D

I am driving sole from Hendersonville /Gallatin. Anyone interested in Carpooling. Mine or yours makes me no never mind. I have a full size Pickup. Plan to leave on Friday and returning Sunday.

      April 29, 2014

    • Jennifer

As much as we want to go, we're gonna bow out due to a family obligation that weekend that just popped up. Hopefully someone else can snatch up the open spots. Hope to be able to do it next year.

      April 29, 2014

  • "Water Lily" D.

Jennifer, I think if you have a camper you will need to secure your own spot with the camp ground. The area we are in is for tent camping only. If you choose to do this, let me know so I can include you in our shuttle, please feel free to join us for meals and comradery.

    April 22, 2014

    • Jennifer

Ok that message was totally garbled. Yes our plan is to make reservation directly with the campground for our camper. Just wanted to make sure me & +1 get included in the overall number of paddlers.

      April 22, 2014

    • Vicki M.

Jennifer, do you want to take my spot for one of you?

      April 22, 2014

  • "Water Lily" D.

Hey all.. there are 2 spots coming available...anyone interested? 2 of my helpers will not be attending. I will take them off the list later today..watch for the opportunity to sign up.

    April 22, 2014

    • Jennifer

I am!!! We will be using our camper for the weekend & can pay the campground for our spot. Will that mess things up with the current rate of $18 for tent campers?

      April 22, 2014

    • Vicki M.

Deb, there is also my spot someone can fill.

      1 · April 22, 2014

I am unable to attend the 6/6 Ghost River float and have already paid the $18 fee. Please email me if you would like to use my spot. Thanks.

Id like to join but I have a "+1" and we would be using our camper for camping. Willing to pitch in for the throw down dinner on sat night.

      April 21, 2014

      April 21, 2014

Please be sure to take lots of pictures and post them. This has to be one of the most picturesque rivers in Tennessee as well as a beautiful campsite to stay at.

    March 27, 2014

Additional fire wood is always needed and appreciated. You will also need firewood for your own personal fires.
