Masapaug Lake (Bigelow Hollow State Park ) - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

  • September 14, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • Masapaug Lake

Plan is to be on the water by 10am, so please plan accordingly. I'm estimating we'll be on the water between 2-3 hours depending on the group. I'm told this lake can get busy on weekends so again please be prepared to hit the water by 10am.

There is a smaller pond at the entrance to the park, this is not the lake. Follow signs to the Boat launch/ Mashapaug Lake, once you enter the park.

Mashapaug Lake is a 297-acre lake surrounded by Bigelow Hollow State Park and Nipmuck State Forest in the town of Union in northeastern Connecticut. The lake has a maximum depth of 39.5 feet and an average depth of 15 feet .

Address: 288 Bigelow Hollow Dr. Union, CT

/ Turn into park and follow signs to Boat Ramp/ Mashapaug Lake

Directions: In Bigelow Hollow State Park, off Route 171, 1.3 miles east of Route 190.
Fees:There is no fee after Labor Day! $12 per car before, for out of state

***PLEASE NOTE*** The organizers in this group are NOT trained leaders or instructors.  The organizers only set the time and place, each person participating in any group trip is responsible for their own safety.  Each participant is responsible for evaluating all relevant conditions for the trip and determining if their skills and equipment are appropriate for those conditions.

Required: PFD (worn), whistle, headlamp/flashlight (evening paddles). Optional/recommended: pump/bailer, insect repellent, sunscreen, water, snack, change of clothes in drybag, sunglasses, hat/visor.

In areas where there is a boat launch intended to be used by people with trailers, please, if possible, launch to the side of the ramp and do not block the ramp with your kayak or other belongings.

Thanks everybody, had a good time. Glad the weather improved, though the wind did keep it interesting.

I detoured down 131 away from South bridge. Turned right onto Fabyan .5 miles down. Followed about 1.5 miles down bore right at the fork then turned left onto 197 after the problem spot

I was doing map quest for distance and the end address put the marker in a spot where there was no water. Can someone help with this?

Above next to where it says Masapaug Lake there is a link to the map, don't know if this is helpful. Its 41- 43 miles depending if you take the pike or 290, about 55minutes from the center of Northboro.

Does anyone know if there is a kayak rental place near this park?

    August 26

    • Mark L

EMS is no longer in Millbury. Stinks. I live near Mashapaug and there are no rentals AFAIK. the closest thing would be White's Landing in Brookfield, MA. Not sure of they let you take them offsite.
