There is a proper way to paddle and most of us do not do it. If you look on Utube you will find some good video like this one­ . This is just one of many.

Once you get in the habit of a better stroke you will find that you do not get as tired as fast and that you can keep up easier. The thing that helped me the most was paddling with people who would show me the correct way and remind me when I kept sliding back to my bent elbow bicycle way of paddling.
