Port Oliver at Barren River Lake: Cookout and Boat Sharing

Featuring Don's Famous Chili

The Port Oliver Recreation Area at Barren River Lake offers plenty of room and amenities.  It has a beach, restrooms, 2 large charcoal grills, hiking trail, a shelter that holds 75 people and plenty of parking.   Please, invite your family and friends to come along.  Bring a dish to share and your kayak/canoe.  We'll test each others kayaks on the water.  I encourage all of our members to attend!  We have a lot of new faces in our group and this is a great way to get to know each other.

Schedule:

     10:00am Barren River Lake Paddle

3:00 arrive for cookout and start grilling

     5:00 we eat!

     The park closes at sundown.

There is easy access to the lake for the boat swapping.

The restroom facilities will be available.

Here is a link with directions and a map.

When you RSVP, let us know if you are bringing a side dish, vegetable, meat, dessert, beverage, buns, plates, cups, silverware or napkins.

The weather was awful and yet we had a blast. That speaks words to the group of people I met on this outing. Great fun, great water, nasty clouds, awesome chili.

We are changing the cookout location to Port Oliver. It is directly across from the Tailwater. The weather is beautiful and the location is much nicer, it even has a big playground!

My schedule changed so I am going to be able to make it. I'll bring some hotdogs.

Is anyone bringing charcoal and ice? I don't have an ice chest but I will fill one with beverages to share :)

    May 10, 2013

    • Phil

I'll bring charcoal and an cooler full of ice that people can use.

      May 10, 2013

I'll bring an ice chest, if I can find it my garage.

Please do not let the weather keep you from attending. The weather forecast is cloudy, then sunny. We have a shelter for dinner. bring raingear if you are concerned about rain, but I don't think we will see much. 20% chance in the AM, which I generally don't pay attention to. I find that unless the chance of rain is above 40% you probably won't have rain. Remember those percentages mean that there is a 20% chance of rain within the WBKO viewing area, not the entire area.

Quick question. How difficult is it to repair a Kevlar kayak and does anyone or anyplace nearby do it?

    May 9, 2013

    • John B.

Probably not any more difficult than repairing a fiberglass canoe. I don't know anyone who does it professionally, but you should be able to find instructions and supply recommendations on the internet, or the boat manufacturer's website.

I would love to come. I don't have a kayak yet. Looking to purchase one and would love any input. Looking forward to meeting all of you!

The kayak you get depends a lot on the type of water you want to go on. Do you want to just do lakes and fairly calm rivers? What about white water? How high in classification are you able to handle Class I & II or up to Class IV?

      May 10, 2013

    • John B.

There will be plenty of boats to try out. I will be bringing my Mohawk Solo 13 canoe, my new Wenonah Argosy solo canoe, and my folding Pakboat 10.5' canoe.

As my mother said once on would be camping adventure, "Aw, it's only a shower and then it rained all day and all night, and caused some flash flooding. Optimistic, eh?

    • John B.

See my post above. Cloudy AM, some sun PM, Then another front later in the evening.

      May 10, 2013

  • John B.

Mary, I have an ice chest I can bring. I will get some ice to fill it.

    May 10, 2013

  • John B.

Looks like the rain will be gone for our event on Saturday:

WBKO forecast for Saturday: "A frontal system moving through the region will continue to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms with its passage Friday night. By Saturday morning, everyone should dry out as the system heads east. Clouds may hang tough through the morning, but some sun should return by midday into the afternoon. Highs will top out around 70°. A secondary cold front swings through Saturday night, which may touch off a few scattered light showers."

My dad is performing at the Portland Strawberry Festival. so I will get there late, but should be in time for the cookout and maybe a little before.

Lots of questions, first timer. 10:00 paddle, how long will that last and how far will we go? Can I borrow one kayak from Gander Mountain or one from Joe M. (please). Then around 3:00 is the boat share and paddling around the lake area setting up for cookout. 5:00 eat. Now is the main dish the chili? and should we bring stuff that goes with that such as hot dogs, buns, or bring our own meat to grill on a grill already hot and ready to go? I am open for anything. I look forward to meeting everyone and get out on the water. I understood we can borrow from Gander Mtn. what procedure do I follow for this. and for the discounts on kayak supplies.

Yes, you can borrow a kayak from gander mountain, just call them and ask them about it. The 10 am paddle around the lake will be casual and the person who was leading it is apparently not coming. So, I will arrive at 10am and we can go wherever we want for how long we want! We will start the grills at 3 and eat as soon as it's ready or the clock strikes 5pm.

I will bring a waters to drink - not cold if some one has ice and an ice chest I could commandeer. And a bag of chips or 2. My plans have changed so I will be there in time for the paddle, sans kayak. I am looking to purchase one in the near future so the boat swap is a wonderful opportunity.

Candy is always good Joe, maybe not chocolate (lol)

Will be there for the paddle but this will be my first cookout. Is this a byom (bring your own meat) affair? Looking at schedule, do families come at 1000 or does everyone go home before feast begins to bring guests?

Hi, Mary. Would it be appropriate to bring my dog to the cookout? I like to spend time with him outdoors when I can, and since this past weekend was a washout, I am hoping this weekend will be better.

I can also bring some plastic plates. in addition to dessert. I would be happy to take them home to wash afterward rather than having them added to a landfill.

    May 5, 2013

may come for the cookout afterwards - but most likely wont make the paddle.

    May 5, 2013

  • Joe M.

OK, I won't be able to make the paddle, but I'm still going to come for food. Is the boat share going to take place during the paddle or afterwards when food starts? Just want to know if I should bring my boats or not.
