Drakes Creek - West Fork

  • Apr 13, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • The White Store

This trip is on Drakes Creek starting at Saddlers Ford Road and the take-out is the Highway 622 overpass. This trip should be about 9 miles in length. From Saddlers Ford to Woody Atkinson Ford is 5 Miles. We'll portage around Woody Adkinson Ford. From there to HWY 622 is an additional 4 miles. This trip could take about 5 hours on the water, depending on river flow.

This section has a rock formation we can climb for lunch and to enjoy the view. There is also a side creek at the same location that would be nice to explore.

On previous trip we met at the white store at Hwy 31W (Nashville Rd.) and Hwy 240 intersection and it worked well, so we will make it our meet-up location. From this location we will travel to the put-in to drop the gear.

This is a class I paddle. Be sure to bring a life vest, a change of clothes and dress for chilly water. After all the recent rains, we never know what the condition the river will be in so, please, come prepared.

Great trip!!! Thanks to Mama Duck Maryellen Self for picking us up, Tamara Wisdom, Bubba Duck Duane Beckett, and I crossed one off my bucket list: paddling Sadler Ford to Phil Moore Park in one day. We did the 22 miles in just under 6 hours including stops.

Hey guys, the last time I checked the gauge it was dropping. By Saturday morning we should be ok. If something changes, I will send out an e-mail. This group of twenty has some salt in their veins so we should be ok. AAARRGGGHHHH.........(pirate talk)

A quick question -- has the decision been made to cap each paddle at 20 participants? Year round, or when the water's cold? Thanks.

Temp really doesnt play into it. Its a logistical issue. The larger paddles are getting hard to manage and keep everyone in a group to manage safety issues. Also some of our parking areas are very limited at one end or the other.

This section of Drakes is a blast. For all you new paddlers: Drakes often lacks water on the upper sections as the summer progresses and when it does get lower, alot of scraping and dodging rocks is required. Now is the time to really enjoy Drakes at its best. So pack some extra clothes and get out and seize the oppurtunity to paddle a great creek.

The posted picture is a walk back in time. Matt or Mike do you have the date? It was before I joined and Dennis' mustache was all black! He was able to match all the boats to their paddlers but could not remember the name of the tall guy behind John.
