Campout and Moonlight Paddle - Center Hill Lake

This year we are having our annual summer cookout and moonlight paddle at Center Hill Lake in TN.  The Floating Mill Park on Center Hill Lake has plenty of room for campers and is centrally located on the lake.  The big cookout and moonlight paddle will be on Saturday.

Here is a website with details about the facility: http://www.recreation.gov/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=71171

When you RSVP, be sure to add what food items you would like to bring to Saturday's cookout.

Don't forget:  you must have lights on your boat to participate in the moonlight paddle.  If you need help finding appropriate lights, start a conversation about it below.

Floating Mill Campground is located on breathtaking Center Hill Lake in the rolling hills of middle Tennessee. It offers a variety of activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, and even hiking on the Lost Spring Trail. Many wildlife species can be observed while camping at Floating Mill including deer, wild turkey, and small game. The campground offers 118 sites. Campers travel from all around to visit Floating Mill's beautiful park and relaxing surroundings.

Important Information

Reservations must be made at least 2 days in advance and 4 days for group sites. This campground requires a 2 night minimum stay on weekends and a 3 night minimum stay on holiday weekends. The campground is open April 12 - October 25, 2004 and sites range from $14-$20/night. A picnic shelter is available for reservation for for $50/day. All equipment must be on site. One trailer and 1 tent or 2 tents allowed per site. Check out time is 3 pm. All garbage must be disposed of before leaving. No alcohol allowed. Church services are held each Sunday at 9 am Memorial Day weekend though Labor Day weekend. Maximum 6 people per site per night; maximum 2 cars per site. More information about this area may be obtained by calling (931) 858-4845. Pets and alcohol are prohibited in the Day Use Area including in the Picnic Shelter.

PLEASE NOTE:  There is a charge of $5.00 per vehicle to launch/put in at the Cookeville Marina.  That includes the vehicle and a trailer, so we need to consolidate as many boats/vehicles as possible to cut down on launch fees.  Once in the water, it is approximately 1/3 of a mile from the Marina to the entrance to Taylor Creek to access the Falls (from Marina about 1.50 miles to the Falls).  The water level will determine whether we can paddle to the Falls or have to hike in.  You will need sturdy shoes to hike in and plenty of illumination.  It will be very slippery and dark, even with full moon.

Also, there is a restaurant at the Cookeville Marina, which is open for lunch and dinner.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to be with you all this weekend, after all. I was really looking forward to it, but a different reality interfered. Peeking at the photos, and I'm envious of what looks like a wonderful time.

We will not be camping but will meet you at the Cookeville Boat Dock Marina. Please someone let me know that this is where you will be putting in for the paddle. I would hate to miss it by being at the wrong marina since there are so many on the lake. Thanks.

I didn't get your message while camping. We had not planned on putting in at the cookville marina, we met at the campsite. I hope you didn't look for us there. Sorry we missed you!

If we can carpool from Bowling Green I'm in on the camping. Does anyone know if you can float on down with a tube and skip the kayak or is it illegal? Cowboy will travel.

Which night is the moonlight paddle? Both?

If you don't want to spend a lot of cash on lights that you won't get much use out of, try glow sticks. Dollar tree has a lot of them and they come in many colors. Always have a headlamp as well. Even with navigational lights a headlamp is very useful at night.

What sort of light do you get and where do you find one? Thanks.

Make sure you try the Hurricane Grill down at Center Hill Marina nearby. Great food and beautiful sunsets. Hope to be there for the paddle and possibly camp.

For lights on your kayak: if you got to Amazon.com and search for Hydrostar SOS you will find a nice light. Placing one in back and one in front allows the 360 viewing regardless of obstructions. The front light I set for red facing me and white facing out. The rear light displays the proper green/red lighting. Find yourself in an emergency and you can quickly switch to an SOS signal visible for miles.

@Maryellen, you are not on site 107! Sorry, my brain is not working due to too much work and not enough sleep. You WILL have a spot.

Cool! Just want to be included with y'all and not too far away! I can handle steps, just not lugging my kayak up and down them! :)

Santa brought me a Kayalite (www.kayalu.com) last Christmas. I haven't tried it out yet but it appears to be the absolute best solution to putting a navigation light on a kayak.
