Little South Fork of the Cumberland River

  • Fairview Plaza Shopping Center

    1005 Fairview Ave, Bowling Green, KY (map)

    36.990734 -86.427765

  • Look for cars and trucks with boats.
  • This is one of our most popular trips!

    Click HERE for directions to the put-in.

    The Little South Fork is a State Wild River from Hwy 92 to Freedom ford (10.4 miles) with clear blue water from the limestone. There is an excellent lunch spot with space for lots of boats across from two white sulphur waterfalls. The mid April date is needed due to water levels and favorable weather.  Due to limited parking - carpooling is encouraged.

    Meet at the Hwy. 92 bridge approximately 12 miles SE of Monticello, 10:00 am CENTRAL, approx. 10 mile trip, Class I at beginning then Class II for second half. The last rapid is the trickiest, but the cars are only ¼ mile away.

    Click HERE to see the shuttle route and get driving directions.

    This paddle has a class II portion and is only for paddlers who would be comfortable in a class II.

    From Sehlinger's book:

    Little South Fork

    The Little South Fork of the Cumberland River is a Kentucky Wild River. Little used by paddlers due to its seasonal nature and its remoteness, it is nevertheless one of the most beautiful and pristine of Kentucky's rivers.
    Draining the eastern portion of Wayne County and the western portion of McCreary County before emptying into the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River, the Little South Fork runs cool and clear over a rock and mud bottom through steep, wooded hills. Runnable from November through mid May downstream from Parmleysville, the stream is primarily Class I with some small shoals and rapids that approach Class II. The river is 30 feet wide in the upstream sections and does not broaden beyond 60 feet as it flows toward its mouth Access is difficult from all but one or two bridges, and shuttles are long, particularly for sections south of KY 92. Exposed rock and a variety of hardwoods grace the usually steep riverbank along with the common proliferation of willow upstream of KY 92. Downstream of KY 92, near Freedom Chapel, the stream enters a massive and beautiful vertical rock wall gorge.
    Above all, the Little South Fork is amazingly pristine and rugged. Dangers to navigation include deadfalls and flash flood potential.

    Any chance we could do this some other time?

    CANCELLED - I hate to do this as we haven't been on the LSF for two years.

    Radar shows the storm is at I-24 in KY. It extends from there to eastern Kansas and from St. Louis south to Little Rock. It is traveling due East.

    A really wet weekend ahead, but the rivers will be full for next weekend.

    In case you didn't get my email, due to a drop of people attending the second group paddle, we are going to combine groups. I emailed John about this and he said it was fine. Please meet at Fairview at 7:00am!! I know the weather is not looking favorable and John may cancel this paddle, but until then, please note the changes.

    Hey folks, I just spoke to Mike about this trip. Mike will be waiting for those of us coming from Bowling Green at the put in outside of Monticello. I will be at Fairview @ 7:30 to meet everyone to consolidate boats and vehicles. Certainly those of you with trucks and vehicles capable of hauling multiple boats and people will be good to have. I'd like to be on the road as quickly as we can. I will see that we get to the put in where thanks to John and Mike, there will be plenty of parking for both groups. Mike will be handling the take out arrangements after the paddle . Let me put everyones mind at ease that we have never left anyone behind! Nobody has ever been left to fend for themselves. Please also keep in mind this is going to be a LONG day for those of us driving from and back to Bowling Green. Not only the early commute to the put in, but several hours on the water, consolidating boats at the take out, and the long trip back home. Please make sure your up to this.

      I may grab a ride with you if you haven't already filled up. Do you plan to camp out there or head back to BG?

    Weds. Weather Check for Monticellom, KY on Sat.:
    WBKO = 64 Degrees, 50%
    Accuweather = 64 and couple of showers, 15% T-storms late
    Intellicast = 60 and 40%
    NOAA = 64 and 60%
    Weather.com = 60 and 30%
    Weather Underground = 66 and 60%

    I don't pay much attention to forecasts of 40% and below.

    I usually go to the put-in no matter what and make my decision there.

    If I decide to cancel I will post the information on Friday evening.

    It is only Weds, so there is hope of the forecast changing. There is a storm on radar northwest of us in Iowa and further north. Don't know which way it is moving.

    Glad to make the cut for this.A couple of questions if I may. Is anyone in this,the second trip,camping at Blue Heron Fri night? I Am considering coming down Fri and camping there. And, I have read a good deal about space issues at the takeout, but I am curious about the put-in. If I don't make it Fri I would prob plan to be at the put-in Sat AM. And an FYI, Have 4WD,rack space for 3 boats,and room for 3 or 4(if they are good friends) passengers.Hope the forecast changes a little.

    April 23, 2013

    • Mike

      I am camping with my son and there are quite a few from the first group camping also. The space better at the put in. I have my fingers crossed on a forecast change too.

      April 24, 2013

    • Mary

      I don't know how much faith you have in it, but Monticello's forecast for Sat. is 20% chance of rain. Not too bad, really.

    For those of you going, get a good nights sleep, eat your wheaties, drink a Red Bull, Monster, pot of coffee, or whatever gets your paddle juices flowing. This will be a great trip! Bring a camera not only for paddle pics, but the beautiful scenery we will see while on the water. Lets hope mother nature cooperates with us for this trip.

    April 21, 2013

    Please do not attempt to go to the take-out. We will carpool the shuttle as there is extremely limited parking at the take-out.

      Pat, the 8:00 AM meet time is only for those meeting and consolidating gear at Fairview Plaza. For everyone else in Group 2 the meeting time is 11:00 AM CENTRAL at the put-in.

    From the put-in at Hwy 92 & Loop Worley Road take Hwy 92 east 5.4 miles. There will be a historic marker on the right. I have put double strands of pink ribbon on the BSFNRRA sign and on the Jones Hollow Road sign. Turn left. Follow the main paved road for 5.4 miles (there are no turns to be taken on this road). You will be at the beginning of the improved gravel road where there is an ATV Trail sign with pink ribbons. It looks like you are in the middle of a farm. Follow the improved gravel road. It will cross a small creekbed and go uphill to an intersection.

    2ND HALF OF ROUTE INSTRUCTIONS: I have painted orange left turn arrows on the gravel road, marked a couple of trees with orange paint and a little further down more pink ribbon. When the dirt road bends to the right take the side road to the river. It looks like you will be dropping off the earth and the turn is marked with more pink ribbon. CAUTION: This last road is rough with limited turn around space. I tore a rear mudgard off my Honda CRV while backing and turning around.

    April 19, 2013

  • John B.

    I have marked the route from the put-in to the take-out with double strands of pink surveyors tape. Also, on the gravel road I have marked the turn with orange pavement markings.

    Both the put-in and take-out have become worse. The put-in due to floods. We will be able to drive through the gate down to the bridge, but not under the bridge. We can park below the gate and at the next house up the road on the right. At the take-out, the road has been 'improved' to prevent erosion, however, there are some large rocks that need to be moved or towed out of place. Parking is more limited than previously due to these rocks in the 'road', i.e. streambed.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
