This section of Nolin River is known for its beauty as well as the opportunity to spot Bald Eagles! It would be a treat to spot our national bird.
We'll put-in just below the dam at Nolin Lake at the boat ramp. This is a beautiful section of Nolin River through Mammoth Cave National Park. The trip will be about 9 miles, which is why we are meeting an hour earlier than usual. We'll take out at Houchins Ferry along the Green River. This will require us to paddle UP the Green River for about 2 miles to get to the take-out. The trip should take an estimated 5.5 hours, not including time to stop for lunch.
Pack a picnic lunch and be sure to bring an approved PFD.
This is a class I paddle, suitable for beginners and first time paddlers, but it will be a long day.

Thanks, Tim, for recommending this trip!
I'll reschedule it for the 29th of this Month. I hope everybody is safe and stays out of flooded waters.
So this will be my first trip with you guys! My girlfriend and I are pretty excited to meet some new people and enjoy a beautiful sunny day on the water. I'm just a little confused... Why are we meeting at Minit Mart in Brownsville and not the Nolin Dam? Are we just meeting there and then commuting to the dam? Do we need to bring both of our vehicles for shuttling purposes? Im assuming that the 10am meeting time is correct. Any help would be appreciated.
Travis,
We are meeting in Bownsville to drop cars on the way to the put-in, it is on the way from Bowling Green. We can't wait to meet you guys too! You only need 1 car, I'll take you back to your car if you need a ride. 10 am is correct.
If anyone has a trailer, that would be very helpful on this trip.
If it isn't too far for you Travis, I would recommend taking care of yourself and taking 2 cars if you feel the need. Last year on this trip I was nearly left stranded. Was the first out of the water and almost 2 hours later finally got to my truck. It seemed to be an "every man for himself" thing once we got to the take-out. Lucky Kenny Hinton stopped by on his way home to see if anyone still needed a ride. Meaning almost everyone made it back to their vehicles and were gone before I did.
I hope we aren't that rude, although I didn't have any phone numbers of anyone on the last trip I was on and ended not getting back to the put in after driving to the take out to leave my truck only to find everyone already gone. I think we need to give cell numbers in case we get lost, etc.
I have tried on the last 2 I went on to stay around and make sure everyone was taken care of.
I don't think it was people being rude. I think, just like me, after a long paddle everyone is ready to be home and hit the shower etc. It's easy to overlook someone or think someone else has them taken care of.
A contact list would be a great idea Tari. That would help all around. On the way to, during, and after a paddle.
I will bring my truck and trailer and leave my vehicle at the takeout (Houchen Ferry) since there is limited parking there (there's only about 6or8 parking spots there if I remember right and often they are full of trucks and boat trailers.
I can haul 6 (5 passengers) in the cab and if people want to leave their vehicles up at the Minit-Mart I can take a few more in the back. My trailer will hold at least 8 Kayaks.
Would like to attend but have another committment Saturday, hope you all have a good, safe time on the water...enjoy
Does anyone attending the Nolin River trip have a double ended paddle I can use or try out before buying one. In case you don't know, I'm one of the canoe guys and want to see if a kayak paddle suits me better. According to the boat and my height, I'm supposed to get a 240 cm paddle, but I'm not picky when it comes to borrowing stuff. Thanks, Doug
Doug, I have three paddles. Will stick them in the truck. Don't know off hand if any of them are that length though, but you are welcome to try one.
Doug, I keep an extra paddle in my car too, you would be welcome to use it.
Thank you very much Tari and Mary. I will see you in the morning.
They found one kayaker and are still looking for the other one...I had already decided NOT to kayak this weekend...taking too much of a chance on any river/creek/stream, etc.
