SPECIAL COLD WEATHER/COLD WATER ADDENDUM TO DISCLAIMER:
This group has certain rules that apply on a cold weather/cold water paddle. Please be clear, if you are unwilling to abide by the following rules on this paddle then you need not attend. If you are unwilling to abide by the group's cold weather/cold water rules you are not only a danger to yourself, but you are endangering the rest of the group as well. Please dress and pack appropriately for this cold weather/cold water paddle. We require that you wear your PFD from the put-in to the take-out on a cold weather paddle. If you don't want to wear your PFD, then don't come. You will be sent packing. Do not wear any cotton clothing. For example, do not show up in blue jeans and a cotton t-shirt. If you do, we will tell you to pack up and head back home. Bring a second set of dry, non-cotton clothing and shoes in a dry bag just in case you take an unplanned swim. If you do take an unplanned swim on a cold weather/cold water paddle, the group will stop and you will be asked to exit the water and change into your dry clothing and shoes immediately to avoid hypothermia. This short delay will avoid a much longer delay when hypothermia sets in and we have to call in the park rangers to rescue you. And that would suck all the fun out of the trip for everyone. :-)

PADDLE DETAILS

We will meet at Jason and Maria Stewart's Mammoth Cave hunting cabin which is located right beside our put-in, Dennison Ferry. See driving directions above. This will allow those with food for the optional post-paddle cookout to drop that food off at the cabin. This is only a 3 1/2 hour paddle, so we'll have plenty of time. The cabin is only ten minutes from our take-out, the Green River Ferry. So we will probably consolidate people and boats, run a few vehicles over to the take-out, then put in at Dennison Ferry.

OPTIONAL POST-PADDLE COOKOUT AND BONFIRE:

There will be an optional cookout and bonfire at Jason and Maria Stewart's Mammoth Cave hunting cabin which is located right beside our put-in, Dennison Ferry. The Stewart's will grill some brats, and have chili, soda, ice, hot chocolate, and all the necessary plates, cups plastic ware and paper towels. Feel free to bring your favorite beverage, and either a side dish or a dessert. PLEASE BRING YOUR CAMPING CHAIR to sit by the fire.

CAMPING:

If you plan to incorporate a little camping into your weekend, too, Mammoth Cave National Park has a great campground. You can find information about MCNP's campground by going to: http://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/camping.htm

OTHER LODGING AT MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK:

You can also stay at the Mammoth Cave Hotel located inside Mammoth Cave National Park. For more information go to: http://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/lodging.htm

Peaceful perfect paddle on an idyllic Fall day and the company only enhanced the experience - huge thanks Joe M and Jason & Maria for hosting this paddle and to Jason and Maria for their generous hospitality and the wonderful cook-out afterwards ~ all the food was delicious and the beverages refreshing! I could so live there in the woods - no problem! Enjoyed my first visit to the Keebler Tree...could still feel the magic. Fun Fun Fun day and evening! Love me some sitting around an awesome campfire with fine folks!

Great day on the Green River today! Loved the cave, cool to paddle in. And the fog off the river really added some ambiance!

Hate to back out a last minute, but like John B. my back is acting up and loading my boat and paddling for hours would put too much strain on it. Hate to miss this event.

  • John B.

My left leg is not working very well. I think it would be hazardous for me to attempt the steps at Dennisons and the steep ramp at G. R. Ferry.

    November 15, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

Sorry, John. Hope you will be stronger and back on the water soon; hope you can make it to the cook-out though! ;-)

I signed up but will be going to cookout only. I am bringing a +1 for y'all to meet. :-) What time do you think we should be at the cabin? Any suggestions on what to bring?

Just checked the weather for Mammoth Cave. We still look really good for tomorrow's paddle.

We got two balloons for the bottom of the driveway to make it more visible as you come up on it. Jason got a batman balloon.

I've signed up for the paddle, but will definitely need help getting my boat and gear down to the river and up to the parking lot. I can't carry much with my back injury. Still using my walker, but my back is slowly improving. Volunteers will be appreciated!

    November 14, 2013

    • John B.

I'll swim! PFD's and the right clothing work wonders.

      November 15, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

John, you know we are all glad to help each other with getting boats in/out of the water...but it does concern me as well.
I've been told before by some very experienced paddlers that if can't self-rescue, then I probably don't need to be paddling. And that has actually helped me in making the decision whether I should paddle, no matter how much I wanted to.
You surely don't want to make your back worse by paddling before you are physically ready and able. Safety is paramount for you and for the group as whole.

      November 15, 2013

  • Maria C. S.

PLEASE BRING YOUR CAMPING CHAIR FOR THE POST-PADDLE COOKOUT. Thank you.

    November 15, 2013

  • Maria C. S.

The weather's looking better than expected. High of 65, low of 55. We will put balloons at the end of the driveway to make it easy to spot. Our mailbox is green. It's a gravel driveway through a field up toward our cabin, which you will not be able to see from the road.

If you are inputting it into a GPS, please make sure you put in the correct road name, and make sure you use Cave City, KY. Since we border Mammoth Cave National Park, many of the roads around us are Mammoth Cave _______, so make sure you are using the correct road name. Disregard the "No Trespassing" sign as you turn in the gate. You are our guest. ;-)
