Green River - HWY 185 to Youngs Ferry

This scenic section of Green River has a large  natural rock arch that you can paddle under (but it is always underwater so don't get your hopes up). We'll begin this 8 mile paddle by going up-stream to view the waterfall at the lock.  When water levels are up, it is possible to paddle up Indian Creek (just upstream from Young's Ferry). This paddle should take 4-5 hours.

This is a class I paddle, suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers. The river access point is the Honaker Ferry boat ramp behind the store at the bridge. The store will be a right turn (on HWY 1749) before you cross the bridge over Green River. The ramp is located just off Hwy 1749, behind the store. The local area is called Glenmore. Directions From Bowling Green: Hwy 185 north - 11.8 miles Turn right on Hwy 1749, then bear left to the boat ramp.

Click here for driving directions from the put-in to the take-out:  http://goo.gl/maps/a8Q4Y

The water will be FREEZING!  You must wear appropriate cold weather gear (wet-suit, hat, gloves).  Bring extra clothes.

thanks Maryellen for taking pictures. I was trying to tell my wife about the paddle and the pictures were worth a thousand words. Thanks again.

You're welcome, David. I don't usually use my iphone but I couldn't resist the beauty of Indian Creek (and Bubba D Duane left his WP camera at the other Bubba's place).

+2 Pirate Points for those that paddle today
-2 for those that don't (and the deck better be clean when the paddlers return!)

Came so close to not going...so much to do this time of year, but I was having severe paddling withdrawals...only one cure for that! Turned out to be the lone female with 5 guys but NO custom burgers! Green River was way up and fast, so it was wonderful to be able to duck in and paddle up Ivy Creek, which was nice, but then we arrived at Indian Creek in no time. Water so green and the overhanging bluffs with "bluffcicles" was really awesome. The pictures will not do it justice! There was a heavy misty rain the whole day and the put-in and take-outs were laden with slippery, sloppy mud, but it didn't diminish or take away from the great day on the Green with some great guys!

Looks like the rain is going to be done by the time we get started.

Even though that didn't happen, the heavy mist did not dampen the beauty of the day or the paddle up Indian Creek - glad I didn't talk myself out of paddling today!

the rain held off for and easy paddle on the green. Indian creek was absolutely beautiful with ledge bluff we were able to paddle under. The water green and very clear. A great group to paddle with and very helpful at muddy take out.

lots of fun! being able to paddle app. 2 miles up Indian Creek was awesome! Rock bluff overhangs covered with dripping (and one falling!) icicles was beautiful!

Well what else are you going to do on an overcast winter day ? Very good day to hit the Green River. Temps, wind and rain held off long enough for us to get our paddle on. We were able to paddle up Indian creek further than we ever have before. Played tree limbo and missed a falling ice projectile during a photo op. The take out was slicker than snot just like every other year. Overall a nice mid winter adventure. It was good to get out of the house and enjoy some good company.

I have really been looking forward to this trip cause you make it sound so good, Matt, but I'm gonna wimp out. Been keeping my eye on the weather forecast and I just don't think I'm up to handling the chilly weather on the river without sunshine tomorrow.

Anyone check the water levels? A friend of mine told me the water is running pretty high....up into the trees?

I saw it two days ago, it's up but dropping fast. It should be about like it was last year.

Oh man, I so want to go, but I don't have enough cold weather gear. Need to ask for Neoprene socks for Christmas. I at least have a 3/4 wet suit, just need socks and boots and I think I'm ready for January... :~)

I wear a couple pair of reg wool sox with NRS Sashquash - wool angora blend work well too. If my feet get cold it's over with for me. Wool can get wet Tammy but, will keep you warm vs cotton getting wet and staying cold. Boots will fill up with water and cause you to sink etc...best to have something that's self draining.

Typo Matt...I meant Joe but, motivators are awesome however, a bull whip seems a little harsh!

Did I say bull whip ? I meant hot chocolate and Girl Scout cookies.

Hey, do we have a facebook group?

I think Matt still has rentals, and no, we don't have an FB page.

I just wanted to make people aware that the put in and take out are traditional very muddy and slick. The take out is a muddy incline so just want to give everyone a heads up to wear some traction.

That trip up Indian Creek was the best section of water I paddled last year. It was awesome. The baby beavers and gar were incredible !

Ready to go! too long off the water! bring cold weather layers and spares. (for those of us who are hot natured, that means cool weather layers.)
