Rio to Munfordville on the Green River

  • Oct 5, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This will be a 2 day paddle from Munfordville, KY to the Green River Ferry in Mammoth Cave National Park (05-06Oct13). This will be a 29 mile paddle that will take an estimated 10 hours on the water.

The meet-up location is the Green River Ferry parking lot, where we will consolidate boats and people, and meet at the Big Buffalo Crossing at 0930 CDT. We should be at the GR Ferry by 0830 CDT to get this done. We will leave as many vehicles as possible at the GR Ferry parking lot, but those vehicles will need a back country camping permit in them (obtain free at the visitor center.) At the put-in there is plenty of parking and restrooms.

This is a long paddle, the water will be cool, the weather mild, and you will be loaded with camping gear. Hoping for mild weather! This is NOT a paddle for those who do not regularly do long (15+ mile) paddles.

It would be nice to make some consolidated/coordinated dinner plans so we aren't all duplicating each other. I'm open for suggestions.

Day 1: Munfordville to (about) Dennisons Ferry.
Day 2: Dennisons Ferry (about) to Green River Ferry.

Rentals are available at this facility: http://www.bigbuffalo...

If you are not sure what to pack, here is our on-going list from the message board:

Thanks a million to John and everyone else who made it possible for me to survive the weekend. I had a great time, even in the rain. :-).

  • Nelson H.

It was my first kajak-camping trip. I really enjoyed it and also enjoyed the brief TALKING I have with some of you. I learned that I need a better paddle for long trips. Thanks for the good time. See you on the next one.

    1 · October 8, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

Sorry, Nelson, some of us (mwah) talk way too much! Enjoyed having you on the trip but I didn't get to see you much on the paddle...heard you were way up front...apparently, your paddle didn't slow you down! :)

      October 9, 2013

    • Chris O.

Nelson was "THE" man- 10' boat, 25 # paddle, & he was in the front the entire way-what a workout! I had to paddle fast just to keep up w/him!

Thanks to you all for making Sparkies first canoe trip in 30 yrs most memorable & fun. The only thing I would have changed was the rain right at breakfast time ----no biggie !!

Good time for all, nothing like sitting around the fire and hearing all the stories and jokes, the rain didnt dampen their spirits it was great fun and good food, thanks to all!!!!

  • Maryellen S.

Plan B turned out great! Weather was surprisingly way better than forecasted. Saturday felt like a summer day with a warm and pleasant evening to camp out under the stars with the usual and unusual noisy critters of the night. Thanks everyone for the canoe-copia full of appetizers, sides, chili, and pulled pork supper! Campfire connection always a hoot listening to the owls and jovial banter, hearing all types of jokes and "true" stories :) Not a whiner amongst us as the rain came about breakfast time...we all ate, packed up and paddled on. I have a little trouble keeping the GR trips separate but will never forget PLAN B, thanks to great leadership from Bubba D Powell, and Captain Matt for Plan B on the camping. Kudos to all paddlers, esp. Tammy in her inflatable but her spirit never deflated and Johnny and BIG TUNA for saving the day, hauling an extra passener and gear! Impressive! Thank you, Plan B for a wonderful weekend!

Another great overnight camping trip ! I want to thank everyone for being patient with the disruption of our first plan. It was a lot of fun and is going to take me hours to get everything dried outta doubt up. Pirate points to Bob and Sparky for hauling all that food, Big Tuna for hauling the extra person and gear, Duane and Chuck for the shuttle, and of course Powell for doing a super job of planning and getting us home safe and sound !
P.s. I think that same bear that visited us last year showed up again.

another great weekend gone! Great to catch up w/old buddies, meet new ones, (hey Chuck, you SURE I can't get that shirt in cotton????), & have tons of stories to tell! Plan B all the way around?? It was great! Rain??? Oh, who cares, we're paddlers, we EXPECT to get wet! Pie w/o bourbon? Well.....it was still good too! Mega thanks to Bob & the barge, Chuck & Duane for shuttling, & everyone else for the good food & company! Can't wait until the next one!

The English language features an anthropomorphic collection of nouns for the various groups of animals. We call a bunch of cows a "herd." We call a bunch of fish a "school." We call a group of sheep a "flock." Finally, let's consider a group of baboons. They are the loudest, most dangerous, most obnoxious, most viciously aggressive and least intelligent of all primates. What is the proper collective noun for a group of baboons? Answer: a CONGRESS!

Grrr, took my mom, who is visiting from Alabama, for a hike today at Mammoth Cave. Guess what? Sure you know. It has shut down. We arrived at 11:30 and a very nice ranger directed us to a short hike my mom could do but we had to be finished at 12:00. After our mini hike I was going to show her Green River Ferry, it had a road block announcing the closure as did all trail heads throughout the park. We tried without success to ignore a closure sign on a trail and a ranger very politely stopped us. Of course I told him my mom wanted her picture taken on this trail. Yes, I threw my sweet 86 year old mother under the bus. So my well thought out plan of having my mom stay at the lodge while I kayak has fallen apart. No passes or reservations are being taken. I have to cancel.

No reason to panic, we have until Friday . We have a man that lives close to the park. As Jason stated, the river will still be open. We will work something out.

As some of you may know Maria and I live just outside of Mammoth Cave National Forest. If want me to get your parking pass to park at Green River Ferry overnight and camp within the park. I am more than happy to get your pass when I get mine. I will need your Make/Model of your vehicle as well as your license plate number and what state in tag is issues in. I need this info no later than Tuesday, Oct. 1st that way I have the rest of the week to get over to the visitor center. If you want me to pick up the pass for you put your info as a reply to this message. I will not be looking all over the meet up site for this info meaning if it is not directly under the message I won’t see it. If you are concerned about putting your info on the site, remember that if someone wants the info they need all they have to do is look at your car. :-)

Jason, I totally agree with you....you can't "close" land owned by "we the people" but according to a post on the BG hiking meetup that is exactly what they have done. One entrance barricaded, trailheads and pull offs taped off. Socialism at it's finest.

Silly question/statement! With the Government shutdown...I agree they can't block the water ways, however, our "wonderful" government can go through the process of barricading the parking lots. Which aren't supervised anyway...Our government LOVES us! Just something to think about and prepare for!

    October 1, 2013

    • Jason S.

Pete: I will drive by there on Friday to make sure that the lot isn't blocked. That would be very federal government to shutter up the park before clocking out. That way "the people" understand how the government shutdown is affect them.
